I have to choose a Linux distribution for my tafe class and I’m thinking about Mandriva. From what I’ve read: It’s good for beginners, is mainstream, fairly well supported and is available as a desktop distribution.
If anyone else has suggestions it appreaciate them.
Thanks in advance!!

Mandriva 2010 (KDE) is a fine distro. However I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon the outstanding Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation
Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Mandriva is a good distrobution. it’s the first one i used when i started playing with linux. However, i would now recommend Ubuntu or Kubuntu depending on whether you want the GNOME or KDE window manager. The reason i suggest Ubuntu, is because they have a huge community forum that can answer pretty much any question you have, if that haven’t already in their archives. With Mandriva, community support is more limited as the company that makes Mandriva earns income from paid technical support. With Ubuntu, its free so there is more help available.
Mandriva is an excellent distro but I have to agree it about equivalent to Ubuntu or Linux Mint or Opensuse if you want EVERYTHING to work out of the box you may go for MANDRIVA POWER PACK it is a paid linux like Suse but comes with EVERYTHING included probs with Ubuntu is that is you are on a laptop your wifi probably won t work

Mandriva is a wonderful distribution and I have to answer back that comments above.
First of all:
You don’t have to buy the Powerpack for a great out-of-the-box experience. The Live-Edition (Mandriva One) has mostly the same proprietary codecs and driver installed. So you are able to play mp3s, use flash and the proprietary drivers for WLAN and graphic cards are used automatically.
In the powerpack are some more apps like acrobat reader, skype, opera and also some commercial apps (Fluendo DVD-Player, some Fluendo Codecs) pre-installed.
The second: The support through the community isn’t limited because of Mandriva S.A. is selling support. You are will get community support the same like in the ubuntu-community. Nevertheless, the community of ubuntu is bigger and the wiki is better.
One big advantage of Mandriva Linux is the Mandriva Control Center where you can completely administrate you system with a few clicks. Have a look at:

So, to choose a distribution is always a very subjective and personal decision. The well known distributions are very close in the quality, hardware support and usability so why not test all and choose what ever you like. All of this distributions are available as Live editions. You can boot them from CD and test them without any need to install them (but beware, that the performance will be a lot worst than as an installed system).

Mandriva is an excellent choice. Many people (such as the 4 who have already commented) like *buntu and its spinoff, Mint. But I’ve never really gotten a *buntu distribution to work on my machine. In contrast, Mandriva has worked flawlessly for me in two years’ constant use.
Plus, Mandriva has their home-spin Mandriva Control Center, which puts a (mostly) user-friendly face on dozens of system administrative functions. Personally, I’ve become addicted to MCC.
Happily, you can download live CDs of Mint, Mandriva, or most any Linux distro you want to try, and see for yourself which one is right for you.
If you do decide to look at Mandriva, choosing the right “edition” is very important. For evaluation purposes, I *strongly* urge you to choose the “One” edition. It’s a single CD, and has all the proprietary goodies on it.
