Will it? I never had tried Linux, and I do not know what the ups and downs are compared to Windows. Someone care to help? Thanks!

Sure, there are distros designed to run on older machines and they are up to date.

I think you should start with Peppermint Linux first : http://peppermintos.com/
To be honest, some of my favorite minimalistic distros are Puppy, tinycore, slitaz, and slax.
Puppy linux runs very well on older hardware. Read about it here…

If it looks like it might work for you the download is here.

This an ISO file for a live CD. Download the iso file burn it to a cd using your favorite burning software. If you don’t have software that will burn an image file you can download imgburn here…

put the burned disc in your cdrom drive and reboot with your computer set to boot cd first. This CD lets you test puppy without any permanent changes to your existing setup.
Depends on which distro you get. Ubuntu will probably run just fine on your hardware, but from the sound of it you’ll need to disable the flashy new effects. Also the main downside to linux at the moment for me is that its still using xserve for the graphical interface. This makes flash videos kind of choppy and also the sound can be a pain to configure for a linux newby. Download an ubuntu live cd, and you can try it out without installing it.
