Will Microsoft need to at some time consider an open source operating system?

I ask this question owing to the increasing popularity of Ubuntu.
I used to be anti-Linux, but I am now converted since Ubuntu 7.04 came on the scene.
It does everything Windows does and just as well.
And its Free !

Microsoft’s latest statement to developers ws "Do not mess with the Source Code".
Interesting question. While Microsoft may one day have to offer a free OS, I do not think it will be any time soon because of support issues. Computers are as necessary in American society as telephones. Everybody assumes they need access to one for some reason and when it comes to PC Microsoft is familiar. Most people are loyal to a brand. While many people can power on a computer, few can fix an issue when it happens so even with an open source OS who do the less computer literate people turn to for help?
BTW, Microsoft already has a contract to offer support for SUSE Linux with Novell.
