Why would a company or person choose to use Microsoft Windows instead of Linux?

Because Window offers full functionality straight out the box. With Linux you have to be a command line freak to be able to get most out the system.
The major issue for me though is inability to run Photoshop on Linux. It makes Linux unusable for me.
More people know how to use and troubleshoot windows. Imagine having to constantly retrain people how to use linux. This would get really expensive, probably more that the licenses that Microsoft charges. In either case I think people should switch to linux and support it!
Why choose Windows? It has become the standard. *Everyone* knows it, they have marketing power & MS is the sole developer which makes it a standard so more people develope for it (it has a huge software base) and over all support by third party developers.
Linux (which I like, but still has a way to go) comes from several different "distros" or developers so there is no "standard"or centralized support- example rpm (redhat packet manager- a software installer) some distros support these – some don’t.
The biggest hurdle for me is that, Linux is sometimes difficult to install software on, some use rpm, some use other methods, some you have to compile and down load extra libaries… it goes on and on. Linux has picked up a lot of business as a server OS more than a desktop OS.
There are a few reasons:
1) A support agreement exists when you use Windows
2) Windows has a wider spectrum of hardware support
3) Windows related skills are easier to come by
4) You can’t run MS Office on Linux
linux is not very user friendly. Windows comes preinstalled and is well mostly a user friendly operating system.
