Why is Ubuntu Linux so much better than Microsoft Windows?

Linux reviews applications open source from SUSE Mandrake Mandriva Centos Redhat Debian and more
It isn’t "better" so much as it is "different."
It is very easy to use and runs efficiently on even the slowest of systems. Easy to install and get used to, but there are pitfalls. It doesn’t "just work" with everything out of the box. There are things to download, terms to learn, things to get adjusted to. For example, out of the box, you can’t play MP3s or watch DVDs on Ubuntu. You have to download the correct packages from a repository to make it all work.
I would suggest visiting the ubuntu forums and making a post about the things you needs before you decide to do an install. Ubuntu is GREAT software, but it takes a little getting used to, even if it is easy to use.
Both my parents use it and love it, just has a small learning curve.
Software is definately a concern, you can’t just use any windows software under linux. Though every application for linux is free, it can be difficult to find programs that work as well as a windows one.
(1) The developer community is much larger than windows
(2) They come out with scheduled OS releases, whereas windows just does it when it wants to and then delays
(3) When Ubuntu runs updates, they tell you everything they are updating whereas Windows attempts to update random things in your computer without your notice for sake of saving their own face in mistakes they’ve made in their software
(4) a ton of recommended *safe* programs are available to download through a search feature directly thru the OS…if you need to find an app for windows, they don’t really have a way to recommend applications to you, you have to hunt for them yourself and hope you find one that won’t put a trojan on your computer
Problems with Ubuntu:
(1) Still trying to gain exposure to the hardware world which does not offer a lot of open drivers
(2) I don’t think there’s a support number you can call, but I think Dell is helping them with this, not sure
Take it back to the Sump, punk.
Simply put, more stable, more powerful, easier to use.
Because its free
It’s not.
While I like ubuntu and most of the Live Linux flavors, they cannot do a fraction of what XP can do.
Maybe one day all the Windows games and business applications will also be written for ubuntu, but till that day ubuntu will stay the "second or third OS" on my drive.
Actually I have 6 Live linux on one of my computers.
Glad you asked, I’ve been using Linux in general for many years. Recently I installed Ubuntu 7.04 and was very pleased to discover that it detected all of my high end gaming hardware without a hitch! It’s free which is a big seller for me, I don’t feel that people should have to pay for something that was intended to be free to begin with (internet). Ubuntu is better in many way especially from a security perspective. Very few viruses are actually written for linux, and spyware is almost non existent for the most part. It comes with a great office suite called open office that is just as powerful as MS office imho, and it’s also free! Are you beginning to see the picture now? It works great, it’s free!!!!!!!
If you want to dualboot xp and ubuntu you can do this very easily, ubuntu will load the grub boot loader for you during install. When you boot your system you’ll be repsented with a text menu where you select which OS you want to use! It also has NTFS support so you can still access your windows ntfs partitions from your ubuntu desktop to gain access to your mp3′s for example.
So as you can see, there are many benefits to making the move from MS to Ubuntu Linux, why do you think Dell is shipping systems with it installed?
The thing I like about Ubuntu is it’s open software meaning that you can get the source code so you can write your own custom OS if you wish, try that with MS….LOL
Here’s a great tutorial for installing Ubuntu from scratch:

Oh yeah and to the guy that says you cannot run games on ubuntu, he doesn’t know what he’s doing, I can run any game I want in ubuntu, as well as any MS applications!
Since Ubuntu is open source, it can be easily updated by the users without having to worry about copyright infringements and it can be customized much easier than Windows. Along with it being constantly updated every six months or sooner, you always have the latest and greatest software for your computer. There are also many open source programs for Ubuntu (and other versions of Linux) as well that allows you to run a Windows executable (.exe files) without any loss of functionality.
I think Beau pretty much got the things, however, I would say the Windows has MUCH better compatability with software than Linux, but Linux is free.
Whoever gave Beau a thumbs down is a jackass. (I gave you a thumbs up, hopefully it counters it).
