I have tried Red Hat, Mandrake, and Fedora and I just cant find the "user friendliness" of these OS’s. I guess I cant complain though…. theyre free. Any suggestions on the best linux to use making the transition from windows?

I am having the same problem – I am trying SuSe 10.1 and it looks good – but there are many gaps between how things work in Windows (like networking) and Linux.
Even if Windows costs money – it’s still beter to use than Linux simply because we all know how to use it.
I have over 1000 pages of documentation for SuSe and I still battle to do the most basic things that would not have been an issue in Windows.
Ubuntu?
Redhat is it because it is documented so well. Use support that comes with Red Hat and their own website. Otherwise the transition will be much harder.
It isn’t as good or easy as windows. The "friendliness" factor is based on it "not" being windows, or more specifically Microsoft.
If you knew DOS you’d have a better appreciation for it but it is still hype. It’s what the Internet runs on (UNIX) and the more of a geek you are the better you can appreciate it. Almost anything that you want to do on a "low level" (meaning, under the hood, and usually difficult to learn) can be done easier and better with Linux.
The fluff that MS puts in their products are not as solid as Linux. For instance, have you ever had to "reboot" windows? Or has it every locked up?
Pretty funny questions, isn’t it. Linux can run for months without a lockup or reboot.
The actually hype about the friendliness is that it use to be awful before they go they got a GUI and the first few of those sucked. Now they have perfected it, so compared to the old days, yeah, it’s user friendly.
Not knowing Apple, my guess is your transition is like going from an Apple to a PC. They usually hate the PC.
BTW, Mandrake is great but learn on Red Hat… don’t get the high end version… you need to do just the basics. Learn a lot of UNIX commands and see how they work… from there you know better about the concept of what is going on in the background.
With all that said, if you are going to Linux because you were under the impression it was easier, forget it and stay with WIN.
