Who said it is? If it is better then the software developers would be shifting their focus on Linux instead of Windows. Linux is not for the unskilled computer users by the way.
I like how you say "Opinions welcome" When the question itself is an opinion.
Also Linux is not better than microsoft windows. Linux is a rip off of MAC so you should be comparing those two.
well for 1 its free! not several 100s of dollars
2 it runs wayyy faster take less to run the os windows takes up alot of ram for no reason
and it just is:)
why is it better:
free
open source (You can add any functionality you like)
very light (doesn’t suck up CPU power doing nothing)
rather gifted for programming in certain languages.
easy to install things (one click download and install from a large online database)
other nice features
drawbacks:
Drivers Drivers drivers. Your bound to have something that doesn’t work on each computer
doing some things takes some doing (no pun intended, see next)
having to learn linux terminal to do a lot of things.
and of course, everything is different so learning linux can take a while
Linux is not a rip off of Mac OS NICK! You don’t know enough to debate properly so don’t give your uneducated opinion! Linux is better because it is open-source. Open-source means that the software is free and the source code is available to whoever wishes to modify it. Linux is ever evolving and very powerful in the right hands. Mac OS’s are based off of Unix. Linux and Unix are similar in nature, yet are two very distinct entities!
Well its not necessarily better. just Very different. The key differences are this
Drivers :
Windows: has more native developer (aka hardware manufacturer) drivers
Linux: you plug it in, and it either works or it doesn’t and if it doesn’t chances are there is a non point-and-click process to install the proper drivers
Performance:
Windows: FFS WINDOWS STOP EATING RAM!!!…..depends on the version but ffs windows 7 barely runs on my gaming pc with a 1gb graphics card 1gb of 1600mhz ram and a 3.2ghz tri core processor on an asus mobo. Hence.. Windows is quite the processor hog but its due to its DLL runtimes and the idea that drivers should be managed as seperate processes as apposed to a part of the kernel itself. Advantage of this is that to install a driver doesn’t take a driver for a very specific kernel build
Linux:
Depending the distro and desktop environment as well as autoruns you can boot and run quickly with as little as 128mb of ram. Particularly puppy linux, which i run regularly on an old amd processor running at 400mhz with 128mb of ram and an onboard graphics card that is unidentifiable, is very lightweight. The problem seems to be though that the more lightweight the Desktop Environment (for microsoft user’s its what you see whenever you boot up and your computer is running, also this seems to be the biggest factor in determining resource usage)the uglier, buggier, or harder to use it is. The lightest are VERY minimalistic. While a singular one strives for beauty and efficiency, Enlightenment aka E17 (ive been championing it for ages sry) which while the installation for alternative DE’s differs for different distros. You have a choice. Plain and simple. Also most linux distros offer WAY more eye candy with less resource usage than aero from windows. Google compiz. look at some vid. Youll see. Also part of the base speed is the kernel modules not being actual seperate processes but running in kernel ramspace. also due to a swap partition as apposed to page files and virtual memory. It’s just faster to use ram til you’re out then transfer it directly to a partition,
Lastly
Tools…administrative and other as well as customizability
Windows: You can use windows to set different color schemes. Download themes n such and all that jazz or download programs to add the awesome functionality that you want. But overall. It fails Linux WINS on this one flat out. no questions asked. look at someones desktop who runs and customizes the look n feel of their linux. As far as administrative tools, you have to be kinda computer inclined to use them. Windows partitioner sucks, defragger half works, dont like the services modules or much of anything else cept add and remove programs. Still pretty user friendly. But overall not too powerful. Also if you enjoying toying with you’re hardware good luck overclocking something the manufacturer didnt want you to, without paying for it of course. Security on the tools suck anyway. put a noob on an account with administrative privalidges and see how long it takes them to mess your stuff up.
Linux: WINNER. You can customize everything from keystroke commands to taskbar behavior. Tons of effects with compiz including my fav a friggin airplane. it folds your windows into paper airplanes and they fly to the taskbar. you can set multiple taskbars including dynamic ones and awesome quicklaunches and such with different progs or with stock progs in some DE’s. Pretty good admin tools. Difficult to access for the typical user on a typical non ubuntu linux. Sudo is invoked so its more secure. Way more secure than simply an administrative account. Seeing as it takes some knowledge to even use the tools. they cant screw much up. Especially if you set administrative rights to terminals only. or only a root account, aka no sudo. Overall the tools are powerful, alot of software overclocking support through drivers as apposed to bios.
Overall
Windows: Resource hungry, not very customizable, not very secure, very stable, not easily managed and loses data easily. Costly. Virtually unlimited software but easy to infect with viruses
Linux: Lightweight depending on DE, highly customizable, free, not easily managed, doesnt lose data easily.Limited software, no viruses, more secure admin rights. Also faster boot and install times that microsoft
In terms of sheer speed and resource frugalness linux wins. Simple as that. thats why i love it. its fast. great on old hardware. so just to upgrade to the next version of ubuntu or debian you’re not gonna hafta buy new hardware.
Wanna find out for yourself? Run linux in a virtualbox inside of windows…. See if the linux isnt faster than the windows you’re runnin it on. Nuff said.
