Microsoft has more software and functionality. Linux is mostly good for servers
Microsoft. It is just so widly known that everyone will see it first and will want it because a HUGE percentage of people want it/use it. If is more a matter of people are familer with it then they acually like it better. i think the only reason people like it better is becuase they have never tried others and dont give it a chance. Microdoft is just so conveinent to people in this day. Every knows everything about it fixing wise too.
I don’t know why anyone would use Microsoft junk instead of Linux. The first step is to do your reseach and then discover a distro called Ubuntu. It’s easy to use and they set it up much like Windows so anyone (so you don’t have to be a geek)? can use it. Windows is a terrible, poor OS from the seventh layer of hell engineered to unleash frustration and risk to yourself and your pc and user. The registry is like a spine and all viruses attach itself to it, yep it’s like spinal cancer. Don’t you just love finally downloading all those really neat software updates you had no idea about while your computer is getting drilled by some virus because you use windows? It looks so nice sitting there unharmed while God knows what sneaks into an open backport isn’t that great. And you certainly have to love how Microsoft thinks they still own it after you get ripped off for a couple of hundred when you were uneducated and bought their junk, "is it okay if I change my hardware", you would ask while on the phone with them. Give me a break! Why buy this crap? Linux as stated above is secure and gee whiz even as much as a server when used as an OS. Here’s your answer: Marketing. It’s in your face and Linux isn’t. It’s big money against quality. It’s charm. The eye candy sells and bull**** tells but not enough are listening. But if it’s for a school project than it would be because they have massive support for vendors with all the drivers, a GUI like apple but not for one OS and certain hardware. They make it easy to use or "user friendly" and they always want to protect you from viruses. Good luck to you.
Name recognition and learning curve.
I keep meaning to try linux, or maybe FreeBSD, myself, but haven’t gotten around to it. Or maybe I’ll wait for ReactOS.
Marketting.. Linux is Awsom for security and servers.
Because It’s more user friendly, and it requires alot of typing to really get anything done. Finally alot of people don’t have the patience to learn all the commands, although you have more control over your computer.
Linux was always clunky and required a geek to use it.
get passed the learning curve and it is great. There is also a product called Wine which will allow you to run Windows programs in emulation mode so you can use your old software or games. Open Office replaces MS Office and it pretty mature and it getting better day by day. O. O. will open and write MS compatible documents, spreadsheets, and presentations!
The problem is corporate acceptance and perception of difficulty of using and supporting such an OS. Ubuntu is one distribution that installs VERY easily and the interface looks alot like windows that with a little bit of mental excercise, you can get beyond the learning curve in a few days or so. Linux can be a great alternative to the few hundred$$ needed for the os and associated applications……..linux and o.o. on a new PC will drop the cost of a new computer about $300-500 depending on what version of windows and office is installed. Unlike Windows, I don’t need to have top of the line hardware only to get decent performance from an overly-bloated OS and Office application. Linux only loads what is needed, when it is needed…….take a look at the windows tasks……….why the hell do I need all that crap running when I am not using it? Linux is lean and will give you the performance from your hardware and performance from old systems……….
Recycle your old system, install Linux.
MS has been THE business software for so long to a point where the # of people who know it outweighs any of the Linux systems.. can’t think of a great analogy..
Frankly the Unix system is more secure and it’s more practical for server usage then any Windows System.. My copmany uses Wndows for our severs and it sucks.. My friends copmany uses Linux and his systems run much smoothly. Linux uses the KISS philosophy.
Linux, tho not new is used by people more copmuter savvy than your average consumer who really doesn’t give a crap about the simplicities of an OS until they run into computer problems (anyone who’s done IT can attest to this..)
Almost the same reason people prefer McDonalds. Hell it is just on every corner with those big pretty signs. The food sucks though.
