Why can’t I connect to the internet in Debian Linux?

I’m using Debian Lenny with Gnome, and I can’t connect to the internet. I installed the basic system and desktop, and I’m not sure if I need to install any other packages to get the internet to work. How can I get connected to the internet?
What packages do I need?

You have to install the network card, and TCPIP, and a Brower like Firefox or Mozilla.
Hard to imagine that you got a release that doesn’t install those by default. Maybe it didn’t detect the network card? Ping 127.0.0.1. That is your own IP stack. If it doesn’t answer, TCP/IP didn’t install.
