Debian – Like an advanced version of ubuntu which you install manually in text mode. It uses APT to do package management. Comes with no windows manager. Uses deb packages.
Fedora – The free implementation of Red Hat. Uses rpm packages. Has a graphical installer. Considered to be a middle of the line difficulty.
Gentoo – Like debian installation is done in text mode and comes with no windows manager but like debian you can install one. Uses Portage package manager. Fully source based which means you get a high level of optimization and speed from the programs. Highly configureable distro.
Mepis – Easy to use ubuntu like debian based live distro.
Nitix – Don’t know
Mandrake – Middle of the line difficulty, very similar to Fedora but optimized for a pentium.
Red Hat – Obsolete, it broke into two parts Fedora (Free) and RHEL (Not Free). There is a free version of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux called CentOS.
SUSE – Middle of the line difficulty though I have heard this is one is one of the best to use these days. Uses Yast and Red Hat package manager to manage programs.
Slackware – Like Gentoo and Debian it comes with no windows manager. In this distro everything is configured by editing text files. It uses .tgz tarballs as it’s packages. This distro is very Unix like and very stable.
Santa Fe Linux – A commercial version of Linux.
Yellow Dog Linux – A linux for old Mac architecture (PowerPC) and Cell architecture (Playstation 3)
Your best bet it if Ubuntu does it for you stick with that but if you want to venture out a little. Debian, Gentoo and Slackware are more advanced distributions that require some experience using the Linux command line. Mepis is for the most part based off Ubuntu so it is Ubuntu with a different name. Mandrake and SUSE once installed I hear are great. I would not really bother with nitix, santa fe or yellow dog. It depends on what you like. If you want speed get gentoo, if you want eye candy get SUSE or Mandrake. If you want Ubuntu with a different name that is geared for beginners get Mepis. If you want security get Slackware or Debian.
Fedora from Red Hat is the most widely used and supported.
Well it depends on what you intend on doing with the system. I’ve used all of these and I prefer Ubuntu which is debian based. Redhat is more of a corporate distro for business, and fedora is nothing more then the mature version of redhat. If you’re looking for one that’s easy to install and administer then go with Ubuntu, Dell is shipping systems with it installed!!!!

Ubuntu and SUSE is the best.
try SUSE with KDE Desktop its great.
So far from what I´ve found out, Ubuntu is the best. I like it a lot and when I used other versions, SuSe, Mandriva, Fedora Red Hat, I wasn´t crazy about them.
I spoke with my brother the other day and was raving about Ubuntu and told him he needed to try it (we are both techies) and he started laughing and said he was certified in Linux a few years back. He said Ubuntu was a great version too.
If you hear any different of Ubuntu being the best and there is something else, please let me know. I´m getting on the Linux bandwagon!
i would recommend Red Hat and Suse… widely used, and most complete linux distribution packages
im a debain fan my self and so is just about everyone i know but im still new to linux red hat is the windows vista of linux is so noobish and bloated gentoo from what im told is the best but the learning curv is greater then the others
ubuntu is just debain pre configured for you
ubuntu is good. but kubuntu is better. its a KDE version of ubuntu, and looks and feels better. i installed kubuntu on my pc, and diidnt have any problems with hardware compatibility whatsoever.
RedHat… RHEL is widely used and it is reliable…
