I know the answer is usally "i cant answer that" or "Theres just too many to say" so I’ll narrow it down to five. i go on the internet, listen to music, watch movies, play games edit pictures + videos.
Freespire 2009
Ubuntu 9.10
Linux Mint 7
PC Linux 2007
Mandrake 2010

I recommend Ubuntu.
It’s the easiest, fastest, simplest, and best for Linux beginners. I also think that Mint 8 would be good for a learner, but I recommend Ubuntu because of its easy install. Another great distribution is Puppy Linux. I absolutely love it, but it’s really hard to configure.
Every distribution, unfortunately, has to have Wine. That’s the only way you’ll get softwares to install.
As for your second question, I say yes. It’s a very great switch, I promise you’ll fall in love.
Ubuntu is the most popular and most supported linux os in the WORLD.
Since Ubuntu doesn’t have any viruses I would pick that one because it is great for all of the things you mentioned above.
Internet: Firefox,Opera,Google Chrome
Music and Videos: VLC etc.
The rest you can figure out your self easily.
The reason why you should switch from windows is that you cannot download windows virus or even make a virus (accidentally) for Ubuntu and Ubuntu has everything you need and it is very user friendly.
KUBUNTU 9.10 KARMIC KOALA
i PROMISE YOU you will not regret this.. it is such a GOOD os, and compatible and everything!
For gaming there is XP
For everything else there is Linux
I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation
Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive
LUg.
Ubuntu 9.10 or linux mint 8. They both have lots of software available and you can have fun on the internet.
