There's a lot of live-cd for Linux out there, so you can try it before installing it. It s really neat. I started with Ubuntu, and really happy i did. I think it s the best for starter. Now i'm running dual boot Xp and Ubuntu, and i have Puppylinux frugal install. But insist on Ubuntu, there a really big community, and they are really helpful. There's these chat where you can ask all you're questions live, to users. Gave 2 links, take you're time, try live CD. Welcome to linux community.

Ubuntu - it's very user friendly and has a large and helpful user base to answer questions.

Your Windows applications will not run under Linux, just like Mac OS applications won't run under Windows. You can use an emulator which will allow you to run some apps, but not all. It really depends upon the exact software.

Download Linux LiveCDs that way you can test them out before you decide. I would suggest doing a dual boot system, that way you can have acces to both operating systems, however you can only choose one system at a time when booting. I run all my computers dual boot. I tried Suse but it seems like it bogs the system down when using applications.
