Linux reviews applications open source from SUSE Mandrake Mandriva Centos Redhat Debian and more
I am going to say Ubuntu. I have been running it for a year now. Its pretty strait forward. Ubuntu is more reliable you don’t have to worry about spy ware or viruses.
That is a very good question, and is likely to solicit a few answers. I will give you the pros and cons of each, and you can decide for yourself.
Ubuntu Linux:
Pros: Not likely to get viruses or spyware. Most devices work "out of the box", which means that you won’t usually have to download and install drivers for them. HUGE support community. Literally THOUSANDS of free add-on applications. Comes with free Office Productivity software (Like MS Office, but better). Can NOT be hacked into. (This was proven recently)
Cons: Not quite as easy to use as Windows. Installing new programs can be testy if you don’t download the right type of files (.RPM). Doesn’t look as good as Windows. Not a lot of games.
Microsoft Windows XP:
Pros: Has been out for several years now, and is quite stable. Most all programs are written for Windows. Easy to navigate and use, as well as add / remove programs. Years of experience in the PC area.
Most PC professionals are well-versed in XP.
Cons: 125,000 instances of Viruses and Spyware in the wild currently written specifically for XP. Easily hacked into. Takes a long time for bug fixes to be taken care of. Not always stable. Plenty of instances of drivers getting corrupted and causing your computer to die. Major corruptions generally cause you to have to re-install, thus losing all of your data.
I personally prefer Ubuntu. But, I still use Windows for my games, and the like. Neither is easier to use, really, with the exception of using the command line in Ubuntu (which is very rare, but information is readily available al over the web on exactly how to do it.)
What programs do you plan on using?
(Excluding: Microsoft Office)
Knowing this I can give you the right answer.
You can try Ubuntu for free and see how you like it:
