Understand that Linux and Unix are a family of related operating systems which are scalable from things like Tivo to the supercomputers that do some of our most processor-intensive computing today. It probably is more widely used than Windows — just not on the desktop and it is a flexible tool which serves such a variety of needs no one system can serve them all at the same time.
That is why I don’t recommend any single distribution but instead recommend this:

The Linux distribution chooser will ask you some simple questions about YOUR needs and based on those will make an unimaginative but usually very reliable recommendation. Then just go to the website of the distribution which you are looking for (which is usually the distro’s name with either com or org after it though in Fedora’s case that is not practical) and download the distribution for your architecture. Watch it, recent versions of Windows have a habit of opening isos so if that is what happens to yours look in the \Windows\Temp folders for the iso because that is what you need.
Ubuntu has good documentation. The next step is the same regardless of what distribution you are going to download and burn so I will use theirs:

Here is a linux-centric article on burning an iso. Read it anyhow as it warns against some real problems. Among other things, set a low speed for the burn and WALK AWAY from the computer until it is done. I get good results with 8x speed but sometimes use 4x.

Finally Windows Server 2003 Resource Tool Kit has cdburn.exe and dvdburn.exe which will burn your iso to disk from the command line:

Good luck.
Knoppix is cool. Burn to disc but don’t finalize and you can write your settings to the disc.
Puppy like the first guy mentioned rocks on new machines and puts new life into older pc’s (under 100mb and can be run in ram or from a bootable thumb drive)
Ubuntu is becoming bloated in the way Windows has over the years.
THe best linux for you depends on what you want to use it for, your knowledge and experience, and a few other factors. THis quick quiz will help you select one.
The second link explains how to burn the cd.
You can download the diles for free from the website of the linux you choose.
Good luck
