where can i get linux os and how do i install it on an old computer?
I’m on a quest to learn about computers. I’ve decided to take an old computer that has xp pro on it and try my hand at gnu or linux (don’t know which one because I don’t know the difference between them). Anyway, I think my first step is to obtain the software. If that’s not the first step please tell me what i need to do first. Don’t tell me not to do this– I’m going ahead even if my brain will explode!

It has useful info for new users.
One thing most people get caught up on is the burning process to a cd. Realize that you need to look for ISO files and know that windows can’t handle burning ISO images. You need a third party burning software. (freeburner is pretty good and free).
Burn the files as an ISO… NOT data. If done correctly you will have a bootable cd that should install without any problems.
ok the easiest it http://www.fedoraproject.org
You can download FC8 which is stable. However the is FC9 Alpha on the site too.
I don’t recommend FC9 unless your fully conversant and have used linux before. Download FC8.
This is about a 3.5GB file so may take a a good 4 hours on a 2Mb line.
Burn it to a DVD using nero as it comes down as an ISO.
You need to post the spec of the "OLD" machine just to be on the safeside.
Fedora is a full blown linux distro and is a good road into the OS.
There are some smaller distro’s but fedora allows you both gnome and KDE (the desktop environments).
Once you have played around with it you can get far more support at places like.
There are so many distros. However being a noob myself I have found the RPM installer very useful for adding software.
