I do not run on a Linux OS currently but I’d like to try it.
So does anyone know where I can download it online for free?

Linux is now in a position of offering a viable alternative to proprietary platforms and more than capable of offering a full desktop experience.
You would be best off RUNNING LINUX LIVE so you can get the feel of things.
There are two worth taking an immediate look at and both use the GNOME Desktop Environment being Linux Mint 6 and Ubuntu 9.04 and both are very easy to use.

You download the ISO. image of either Linux Mint 6 or Ubuntu 9.04 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint 6 and Ubuntu 9.04 can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

ubuntu.com one of the best ones out there I personally use Kubuntu
Try Ubuntu, its free, easy, and can run off the CD if you just want to try it before you commit to using it.
Try : http://www.linux.org/
All Linux versions are free, there are many, just gotta pick one, go to the respective website and you can download them. May I suggest Ubuntu as it seems to very popular and is one of the main ones. Knoppix and Fedora are also recommended. It is basically up to you to decide which version you want to try. A little daunting at first but you can always just try a different one till you find one you like, since they are all free.
distrowatch.com has almost all of the linux distros as well as ratings for them.
Linux isn’t an OS, it’s a kernel, but it’s often used as a generic term for any of the operating systems that use the Linux kernel. There are literally hundreds of different distributions that use the Linux kernel, so it depends which one you want to try. Here are some of the most popular ones, though:

Ubuntu is generally the easiest to install and use so if you’re coming from another OS like Windows I suggest you start with that.
