ubuntu, kubuntu, or mint
ubuntu has the Gnome desktop. Kubuntu has kde. These are different-looking window environments. Either of these distros are very good. Their downside is that they do not have multimedia codecs installed, which means that if you want to play media files on them, you have to set them up.
This is why Mint is popular – it has the codecs pre-installed, so no setting up. It will work "straight out of the box". Mint is based on ubuntu. You can get Mint in Gnome and Kde flavors too.
Dont get too bogged down in the whole desktop thing though, if you dont like the one you get you can install the other (and more) through the package manager. Its easy to do in a few clicks.
As fasr as your install options go, Id suggest alternate install cd. Its the most trouble free if you dont need to run the os ‘live’. Also the advantage to having a cd over using wubi (if you are considering wubi) is that its there whenever you need it. Wubi only works when the machine is working and involves a lot of downloading (from what I hear, anyway)
There are some really cracking Linux distros. currently available. Here are some examples
Mandriva 2008.1 Spring http://www.mandriva.com/
SimplyMEPIS 7.0 http://www.mepis.org/
Ubuntu 7.10 http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ (My Preference)
Ubuntu 8.04.1 http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/
Linux Mint 4.0 http://www.linuxmint.com/ (My Preference)
Linux Mint 5.0 http://www.linuxmint.com/
PCLinuxOS 2007 http://www.pclinuxos.com/
All are easy to install and easy to use. For your first outing I would suggest Linux Mint 4.0 or 5.0, as it has much of the software you are likely to use preinstalled.
LUg.
i personally like the linux mint one
get the newest one
Ubuntu is said to be the most user firendly for pwopl used to windows.
and ill agree. I use Kubuntu on dual boot with Vista.
Kubuntu is a viarity of Ubuntu, whihc looks more lie ka windows interface (stuff liek a start menu, folders look more liek windeos etc) though Ubuntu looks cleaner. Its jsut the cost of 2 CD’s to downlaod both and see waht interface you like.
Ubuntu (and its variants) are LiveCD, so you cna test drive linux by popping in the CD nad rebooting your PC, it will run slower than normal cos its using the CD not the hardrive, but you cna paly about and get a feel for it, then install it if you like it( id suggest Dual boot as Windows still has smany things Linux doesnt, yet)
Looked up mint, its new to me, and seems pretty decent, i would give that a go, it uses the KDE interface(hence hte K on Kubuntu) and looks very Windows user friendly.
