you can use open source without investing any money, you can get views and stuff from lots of people. You don’t need to create anything from starting.
The gee money from mainly from donations and/or advertising (if any).
The benefits are that the community is free to look at the source code of the application, script, whatever it is and modify it as they see fit to facilitate user interactivity, functionality, etc.
In other words, no one person is creating it. It is constantly evolving from all different people’s perspective and ideas making an ever evolving product with features that many people want to see or use.
