I’ve actually asked this question before. But when I tried to open the application (It was in "Tar" format, I just gave up! any app should be in "RPM" format as I am a rank rockie when it comes to Linux!!!

Use your distro’s installer to install the program/s of interest to you. In ubuntu you can search for html editor and see all of the programs that can be installed from synaptic. The other distros must have similar installers, otherwise they would have disappeared.
Bluefish is pretty good that should be in RPM an such
Bluefish, and a real good one too is OpenOffice.

How is your Java updated on your system as well, goto:
http://rpm.pbone.net/
and then select the advanced tab then checkmark your distro of Linux. Search for Bluefish or OpenOffice. If your Java works good on this site then all you have to do is click the check requires button and if you have all the requirements to compile it then your ready to go. Otherwise download the requirements and keep doing this until all requirements are met(some requirements like "rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1" or "/bin/sh" might have red x’s by them, don’t worry about those). If java doesn’t work in that web page then just download and install it. If it works you are set.
