What linux distro is great for my netbook?
I’m looking to replace my current operating system with a linux distribution. I would like one that has many applications for media i.e. playing music, watching movies, communication, and word processing. Any programs able to open microsoft document extensions would be great too. I’ve heard of ubuntu but would like to hear about others available.

For what you want I would say Ubuntu remix or linux mint. While other distros can do what you are asking about most of them require more resources than a netbook does.
Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix
Ubuntu comes standard with all the applications you are requesting. Check out http://www.ubuntu.com/ for more details.
Sorry I have to say ubuntu or ubuntu netbook remix or whatever they named the net book flavor. you could try fedora or something but ubuntu in 10.04 nailed the making a netbook friendly ui.
Ubuntu Thumbs up. It is one distribution that has come a long ways from where it use to be. The things you ask about are installed for you, the older versions you needed to install all this. There are a few things you need to install with the package management program, that Ubuntu can not install, but provides the files for you. I was going to suggest the Ubuntu Remix also.
Try the latest Ubuntu version(www.ubuntu.com)or kubuntu the latest version(www.kubuntu.com)
To Open office files there download Open-Office(www.openoffice.org).For movies download VLC media player(www.videolan.org/vlc/)
I was originally a fan of Xubuntu on my netbook but it just didn’t seem right, it was fast and responsive but the interface was not fluid. I next moved to Ubuntu Netbook Remix it was alright and was fast and responsive but did not suit my tastes. What I am using now is Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 version and it works great it is fast and responsive and the interfaces doesn’t give me a head ache like Xubuntu.
I added a few packages to make my Ubuntu a little more netbook friendly.
maximus – makes all windows open maximized and with out the title bar, when used with Opera or any browser with auto-hide enabled on your panels your are able to use all the screen real estate you could want.
Edit:
There was also another app I added to work with maximus it was window-picker-applet it put the title bar into the panel which increases screen real estate but does not lose functionality.
