What Linux distribution would you recommend for a Dell pc?
I’m looking for an easy linux distribution that can be permanently installed on a Dell computer with a ram of 256 mb and a free space of 10 GB.
Preferably, I would like the distribution to be easy to use and install (I’m a beginner) and to have all the necessary applications and characteristics needed for a personal home/desktop usage.
If possible, it would also be great if the distribution was in Spanish and had useful tools included with it, such as open office or firefox.
Do you know of any Linux distribution that matchs these requirements? What distribution do you think is best for me?

Careful, doesn’t sound like you have a very powerful PC that might bog down with some of the other Distro’s graphical interface.
SuSE and Ubuntu are definitely the beginners distros. if you think you can manage it though you can try to run Puppy Linux or Runty Little Linux, which might give you more speed.
Of course these won’t have your tools. Ubuntu and SuSE have all their needed tools in it, you might just have to tweak your settings alittle bit.
You should go for fedora core
It is definetely the best.
Definitely Ubuntu!
Ubuntu runs in Spanish if you want it to.
It is easy to install and set up. Last time I installed Ubuntu, it only took 20 minutes.
If you want to run a "lighter" version of Ubuntu, you could try Xubuntu. Both versions will run Firefox and OpenOffice. Ubuntu comes with both programs, and you can download OpenOffice for Xubuntu with just a few clicks of the mouse.
There are thousands of free programs available for either version.
Ubuntu is the best Linux distro for beginners.
If you have any questions while you are installing or using it, feel free to email me.
I would say to try something like Fedora Linux. That is the one that is built for a desktop environment and not a server.
I have had a lot of success with SUSE 10.0…this distribution includes firefox and open office. It also has amarok (the best music player ever) and comes pre loaded with main actor…
NOVELL also offers support for SUSE for a very small fee.
SUSE has some of the best hardware detection of any distro and NOVELL has made a very intuitive desktop environment. The only real difficulty I had with SUSE was networking..you have to manually put in the gateway for your router…if using some other connection it may be easier…and bypassing certain licensing issues… because microsoft chokes the market SUSE is unable to provide full rights for things like Mplayer ect…just do a search online for unlocking that stuff….and setting uo repositories (where you get your software from)…Ive tried debian and mandriva but I really like SUSE 10.0 the best…hope that helps
Try UBUNTU. I guess ubutu is the best linux distro for computers with lesser RAM capacity like 256MB
Fedora Core linux, the open source leg of redhat, is the best supported and simplest install that I know of. The fact that your computer is a dell really has no relevance, but it will be worth your time to write down the make/model of all the hardware in your pc before you try it including graphics card, cpu, chipset, network controllers and sound controllers. This will save you time configuring. Once finished the default install of Fedora will include most everything you need for a desktop machine and using rpms is far easier than most.
Dell has a partnership with the evil blue screen organization so most dell motherboards are hardwired for MS operating systems, though you can try your luck with Ubuntu or Linspire (you pay for support). You will be able to install though you will contantly be fixing one problem after another. my advice get a different brand PC.
As a beginner Linspire is best. I think Ubuntu has different language implementations and tools included are easy to get, its a free world out there, you are about to discover.
I like knoppix. The OS can run from the CD, allowing you to try the OS out before permanently installing it. The system correctly identified my system and has run very well since then. I don’t know if it comes in Spanish, sorry.
I am likewise a neophyte and was able to get this system running without a lot of drama.
Highly recommended
