What is Yellow Dog Linux for PS3 RPM?

I am trying to install Yellow Dog Linux for PS3 on to my PS3. Because i dont want to screw up the PS3 i surfed the internet for tutorial from http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/502201
but it started to talk about something called RPM can someone explain me what this is. thanks
