Linux reviews applications open source from SUSE Mandrake Mandriva Centos Redhat Debian and more
well, linux is made up of open source software: software that is out there and is free and everybody is free to edit it and modify it and distribute it any way they want. windows is proprietary software: it is closed source and no one but Microsoft can modify it and distribute it.
Basically you must pay for Windows. Linux is open source meaning it is programmed and developed by people without profit. People all over the world contribute free software however linux can sometimes be more complicated because its being developed by people in their free time while windows and mac os are developed by people as a job.
linux has less users and is therefore more stable since less things are around to screw it up. Windows on the other hand is more compatable with the general software market and is (presumably) more user friendly and easier to use. As for being open source and proprietary it means that linux lets anyone who wants to write programs for it and write new versions of it for free distribution or to do whatever they want with it. Windows can only ever be released by microsoft.
It’s simple you can get the source code of any linux O.S where for Windows you do not get that.
Linux open source like UBUNTU are free because they consists a little of softwares but high level security. Linux is especially there not for client, but for Server Side.
Windows XP, Me, 2000 Proessional can be used at the client side and Windows 2000 Server, 2003 Server, Exchange Server can be used at Server Side. But Microsoft OS are not having that much tight security as compare to Linux.
If u want to have any OS for Home use, you must buy Windows OS (XP / Me / 2000 Pro) because either your Softwares and games will not support Linux. That’s simple.
Linux is open source, free under GNU, Windows is Lincesed os. Windows is developed by Microsoft. Whereas linux has many distributors such as redhat, mandrake etc. Again remember, Linux is more secure, windows is less secure than linux in case of virus, worms.

A coomputer without an operating system is nothing. The operating system is a basic set of programs that takes the keypress on the keyboard and interprets the input, it operates the disk and the screen display and it is the shell that allows other programs to run, like spreadsheets, browsers and games.
Microsoft has evolved their proprietary operations system for basis Intel based processor systems for years, eventually into the WIndows systems we see now. Is costs about $100 or so as priced by Microsoft.
UNIX was developed and still sucessfully used for a variety of computer proceessors. HP, Sun, and many other license their UNIX systems for big computers for corporations for a lot of money.
Linus Torvalds, a student years ago, decided to write an Intel based UNIX operating system. He called it Linux. He also decided to make it freely available to everyone by exposing the code to the public and letting those who had a better idea contribute to its evolution. This is the nature of Open Source.Although it is generally free, some companies, like SUse and Redhat have added their own proprietary features and charged for distributions.
Proprietary means that what you are buying is the right to use the software (such as Microsoft Windows)according to the rules of the end user agreement. It still belongs to Microsoft.
Computer programs are written in readable words and symbols. This is called source code. The source code is then compiled into computer only readable symbols, making it impossible to change. To change the program, you modify the source code and recompile it. Microsoft doesn’t allow anyone outside of the company to see their source code. Linux, is a part of an operating system where most of the source code is available to anyone to change or use without charge.
