Go to distrowatch.com http://distrowatch.com/ This is probably the best place for info on many, many distros out there. On the right side of the page and down a little is a section called "Page Hit Ranking". This tells the most 100 popular distros. I suggest if you are not a Linus pro, stick with a popular distro. The more the users the better you can find answers to problems that may occur.
if you like the classic Gnome desktop, use Linux Mint, if you like KDE, use Kubuntu or OpenSUSE, and if you like Gnome Shell use Fedora.
Lighter distributions include Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux.
Slax is a good portable distribution.
If you want a server, use Red Hat or CentOS (which is a gratis-free version of Red Hat and is fully compatible with it).
I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 11. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled.

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 11 then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD for installation

Linux Mint 11 can also be run straight from the LiveDVD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive
