What is the best Linux OS in your opinion?

I recently built a computer and need a good OS. Linux. The only thing is I don’t know the first thing about it. I’m looking for a good looking GUI, but with minimal RAM/CPU usage. Thanks!

Ubuntu 7.04
Ubuntu 7.10
Ubuntu 7.04 is the earlier one, whilst Ubuntu 7.10 is the latest. They are both awesome when married together with Compiz fusion.

Its very low on system resources, these graphics were produced using :
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card
Intel 1.8ghz Pentium 4 cpu
512mb RAM

any ubuntu based distro is agreat place to start for newbies I use linux mint as it has lots of other goodies that make dvds and lots of other media work right out the box
Hi, well all Linux systems r equally good. It is all about what the user likes. I use OpenSUSE 10.3 currently. Since u r a new user then I suggest Linux Mint 4.0, its based on Ubuntu 7.10 but its a bit better.
If you are new to Linux, ubuntu is the best… Besides, it is free… Mainly, many drivers are available for ubuntu…. I’m running ubuntu on Windows XP using VMware… Installation is easy and you can find a lot of instruction in Google…

Debian, hands down. Use it with Xfce4 or Enlightenment. XFce4 is the smallest of Desktop Environments(DE). Enlightenment is a reknowned Window manager(WM).
DE == WM + file manager, desktop eye candies such as icons, toolbars, etc.
With Debian, you get an OS with some 20000+ software packages with which you can build your computing environment. All free.
Keeping minimum RAM usage, Xubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) would be good for you. Even the new Fedora would also work fine.
