I would like to try Linux on a PC. What is the best Linux distribution which includes open-source and is free?

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 6 Main Edition which is Ubuntu based. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled.
You would be best off RUNNING IT LIVE so you can get the feel of things.

Once you have got the feel of things you may wish to consider an installation

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 6 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.
Remember you can RUN IT LIVE !
Currently running Linux Mint 6 ext3 with Compiz 0.7.0

OS X is not linux… it’s its own OS. The Kernel is based on Unix, which is different from Linux.
Anyway, Ubuntu is a pretty popular Linux distro
I like both Ubuntu and Mint.
OSX is not Linux, OSX is BSD.
All Linux distributions can do the same things, run the same software.
The only difference is what they come with.
My advice is to start with Ubuntu. It seems to be the most user friendly. OpenSuSE is good as well.
Mac OS X is not Linux, it is a Unix-like operating system like Linux, but it is not a Linux distro.
Look into these distros, they are very popular, well supported and easy to use.
(K)Ubuntu
Mint
openSUSE
counting mac os as a linux distribution is a bit fuzzy to me, considering it was the NeXT system, but utilizes the linux kernel. i wouldn’t rate it very far up the list either.
my favorite one and the one that frustrates me the most is slackware. it can be installed on computers the other distros balk at. it’s lean, it’s mean and it’s super fast because it’s no frills.
Mac OS X isn’t Linux. OS X is built on FreeBSD (Unix) and on top of that is it’s own operating system in general because of how it’s setup and operates. All Linux distro’s offer free open source operating systems and they’re all free. There really is no "best distro" for Linux. There are over 100 distro’s for Linux out there. Just a matter of finding the one you like most. There’s Fedora, Mandriva, SlackWare, OpenSuse, Gentoo, Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS and many others. The distro’s I just labeled are some of the top rated (most used). I personally use Mandriva Linux 2008.1 because it works well with my dual monitors.
OS X is nice but for technical usage, it’s a notch below Linux.
Everyone likes Ubuntu which uses deb package management and really kicked Fedora and others in the butt a little bit. However, now I see NO advantage to Ubuntu over say FC.
Personally, I prefer Fedora Core 11 with the fusion library to be the easiet to manage and use. Plus Fedora is more market oriented as it’s a cousin to RHEL.
