I’d also recommend Linux Mint (which is based on Ubuntu).
But Ubuntu 7.04 is no longer supported (it doesn’t get security updates).
I believe the latest version of Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu 8.04, and that’s fine.
yes if you are just learning linux ubuntu is the easiest way to learn
Linux Mint 5 is ideal http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_elyssa.php
Here is a full graphic installation tutorial http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-linux-mint-5-elyssa-r1
Also I thoroughly recommend a specific release of Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 7.04 ‘Feisty Fawn’ beats all the rest of the more recent increasingly bloated releases with ease.
If you want to try the best Ubuntu ever here is how. A little more needs to be done as 7.04 is no longer supported.
Ubuntu 7.04 (download)
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/feisty/
Ubuntu 7.04 (repositories)
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-security main restricted universe multiverse
You need to add these repositories as without Ubuntu 7.04 will not work properly.
Ubuntu 7.04 also comes with the awesome Beryl (pre-Compiz Fusion) http://www.beryl-project.org/features.php
