What is the advantage of installing a Linux OS on a PS3?
I don't care for the default interface on the PS3, the 360's is much better in my opinion. I am not familiar with Linux at all. I know what it is but have never used it. I am curious to know what advantages or even disadvantages come with installing one of these OS's on my PS3 (60GB)? Does it effect the functionality of the system? Do I lose any features? Is internet browsing better? How much memory does it eat? etc. etc. Please explain in detail. Thank You.

Linux is the collaborative effort of programmers from around the world working in their free time. There are many many versions of Linux.
Linux eats up fewer resources.
It is open source (meaning you can see the code that makes it up) so if you are a programmer, you can do some hacking.
Its more stable.
Downside—It's harder to use, harder to install programs if you need to. Ubuntu is the most user friendly version (distro) as of now, so I'd go with that to start with.
I find that you don't gain much. I did it on mine for the same reason that I installed it on my ipod. To see if I could. Kind of a geek/loser thing you know.
it's just like a computer
Installing Linux does not give you a different user interface to the PS3's existing functionality, it just uses all that lovely hardware for a different job, and you can switch between the two software systems. The only thing you lose is 10GB of disc space.
Installing Linux will allow you to run word processors, databases, drawing programs, and "standard" browsers such as Firefox on the PS3, with a standard USB keyboard and mouse.
However, unless you are very interested in Cell programming, the resulting Linux system will not be terribly powerful as it only uses the PS3's PowerPC-like core, and not the SPEs (though I think 5-6 of them are available for programming).
If you already have a PC, and aren't desperate to have Linux on your TV, you'd probably be better installing Linux on your PC.
When installing Linux on your PS3, you don't lose any functionality. Your PS3 and all your games are on a diferent part of the hard drive.
The internet is a better because it's exactly like using a PC.
But the main reason I installed Linux on my PS3 was for the SNES emulator. In other words you get the entire SNES library for free.
