What is a good (stable) and easy to use 64 bit linux OS?

Preferably one that runs well on an HP/Compaq laptop.
I’ve tried ubuntu 7.10 64bit, but it was VERY unstable. The OS locked up or crashed randomly regardless of what I was doing or the time of the crash.

Try opensuse, I prefer it to ubuntu and it has more of a linux like feel to it (I feel ubuntu hides lots of the features to be more user friendly). It’s also using KDE, I have no idea if it will be stable on a 64 bit system but I can’t see wy not.
Have you looked in your /var/logs and dmesg output for reasons why its messing up so badly?

Fedora from Redhat
I have an HP Pavilion. I installed 64bit Ubuntu on it but decided to remove it because 32bit Skype was such a pain to try and install and get configured, and other programs are also not available in 64bit. I had no stability problems – just didn’t like the hassel of not having 64bit programs.
So, I switched back to 32bit.
Debian or Fedora.
main difference is package manager, repository, community.
Besides these things, both are very good.
Try looking into FreeBSD 64bit(AMD64)
