I know I can build one capatible for windows but I was thinking of going with linux because it gives you more freedom but I was having a hard time figuring out what was campatible with linux in order to build a 3D system.

Ubuntu is a good linux distro. I dont recommend ati or intel graphic cards with linux because they are not good with 3d acceleration. Nvidia would be the best choice of graphics card. Oh and the newer the card the better it will work. A good processor would be an amd phenom quad core. A couple gigs of ram. If you have a budget than amd athlon dual core would even be good. It all depends on how much money you have to use for the computer. Oh and if you didn’t know valves source engine and steam are coming out for linux in a few month. Also there was a humble indie bundle game package that had some good games. So if anytime right now would be a good time to make a linux 3d computer. Just save some money for the games =) than again im forgetting you might not be a gamer. If you are a video editor there is a new video editor coming out forgot the name but its coming. Some currently good video editors are kdenlive and openshot. Well thats all I have to tell you.
1. You need to know what distribution you are going to use.
2. You need to go to their web site to find the compatibility list.
3. Linux already has Compiz Fusion for 3D graphics and desktop environment.
Really can’t help, since that is about all I know about it, even though I run Linux Operating Systems. Just not interested in 3D.
