can I transfer windows files to a linux based os computer? I’d transfer the files from a terabyte external harddrive.

yes. as long as ntfs-3g is enabled on your linux os. if its not, open up package manager and search for ntfs-3g, install it and your good to go.
if you format your external hdd to FAT it should automatically work with both OS’s .
