The 'applications' and 'places' and 'system' things are gone on my linux computer?

You mean they are gone from the panel, right?
Right-click on top of the panel with your mouse and select "Add to panel…" You should find the "Main Menu" option from the list that comes up.
You can actually reconstruct the whole panel like this.
BTW, if you ever accidentally remove the Network Manager icon, you can add it again by adding "Notification Area" to the panel. I did this once and spent some time scratching my head before I somehow figured out I had to add the "Notification Area" to get the Network Manager back.
It does matter which version of linux you are using.
