Is it really possible to have a ‘truly unbiased’ benchmark test for Linux and Windows? Both camps seem to run tests aimed to show off their own systems. Users – from both camps – are just as unreliable! This one (from the Linux side) seems to be one of the best I have seen http://www.tuxradar.com/content/benchmarked-ubuntu-vs-vista-vs-windows-7 – I would also like to see server performance tests, and even various Linux distribution ones ……
For the time being, I’s still using Linux Mint 9. And I’m trying to figure out what my next long-term plan is going to be. I love the new look of Linux Mint 10. But I also love the potential of great things that can come from Linux Mint Debian (such as life without Ubuntu!). If this was about "playing it safe", then staying with Linux Mint 9 for the LTS seems obvious. But I’m not the kind of Linux support that like to stay in the same place forever; I like to look ahead!
Please tell me your second opinions. Thanks in advance.
Hello, Im currently in grade 12 and im wanting to find a good OS to use for my university years.
So Im running vista and in getting Windows 7 but I’m wanting to try a Linux OS. I tried Fedora, Ubuntu and Mint OS, but I have troubles (i.e unfamiliar to the RPM and other commands) and I had some trouble with my graphic card
So here is my System specs:
-Intel Core2 QUAD @ 2.33GHz
-nVIDIA 9500GS
-6GB RAM
-1TB HDD
-802.11b/g wireless
Note that I might be getting a laptop but the specs above are of my desktop)
So which Linux OS should I try?
Im looking for:
-Something easy to use (but I don’t mind challenges or learning something new)
-Im used to more a KDE then GNOME
-Easy to customize
-Multi-task/Multi-thread
-Good platform for Development and research and data analyzing/creating/modifying and also good for using Engineering/Scientific Applications (need that as im going into aerospace)
-Good for documenting and office working (i.e Microsoft Office or any variant and able to use Adobe)
-Good for multimedia
-Good for gaming
-good for leisure use
-very good system tools and a great security system
-and just overall very efficient, powerful, long lasting, and the ability to utilize new Technology (i.e. touch screen)
Please and thank you and I know some people might say stick with Windows, but I don’t want to be in trouble of viruses and data loss.
Thanks in advance ![]()

I ran the cd on a virtual machine and it worked.

I’m looking to replace my current operating system with a linux distribution. I have been using Ubuntu for awhile on my laptop, but I’m a linguist and I need to use multiple keyboard layouts; however, Ubuntu only allows you to assign four different layouts at one time. I am really fond of Linux products and don’t intend to go back to Windows any time soon, so I was wondering if there was another form of Linux that would solve this problem for me, because I need 7-8 different layouts.

My buisness just outgrew itself, and we now have way too many clients to be using just a dell poweredge server with ubuntu on it. What I want is an open-source(preferably linux/unix based) enterprise network/server operating system with client support. Does anyone know of such a thing(similar to Novell’s Netware) that is open source-like GNU/BSD/LAMP based? Because I refuse to shell out 0 out of my own pocket for Novell when there are so many other open-source projects out there. And I’m SURE one of them is an enterprise OS!!!!
Requirements: FTP, Active directory, Proxy support, client support(logging, group policy, etc.), DNS, print server utilities, and remote management/access.

I’m having the most terrible fracking problems with Ubuntu for some fracking reason, and I need to get rid of it, and since this is a new comp with nothing important yet, I suppose I have nothing to lose by restoring my hard drive or whatever….
So, will it?
I am asking if anyone can recomend open source libraries that can read and write different file formats, particularly the ones that mobile phones can understand such as 3gp or 3g2. We need to write a program (on Ubuntu) that allows the user to upload a .avi or .mov and have it converted to a .3gp for example. A bit like what is done here at…

I know that you can put Linux (Ubuntu to be exact) onto an External HDD. I’m wondering if it’s at all possible to put it on a thumb drive? I have a 2gig one, and as I understand it, ubuntu is only 700mb. Can I do it?
