Hi all
I installed java6 rpm on OpenSuse10.2 (which has java 1.5 by default). When using the java -version command, it displays that it has the version of 1.5. I changed all environment variables to refer to the newer java but nothing happens.
I’ll be glad if any body could help.
thanks in advance.

Linux and C programming?

Why is it so difficult for me to install a C program language to do my programming? For example, when I tried to install Eclipse, it said my system does not have rpm. But when I tried to install rpm, the system said it is not available.

Perhaps can someone kindly tell me step by step how do I install a C programming language?

Thanks in advance.

I am only a novice.
Thanks for all the answers so far. I am currently using Ubuntu 7.04 Linux.

How to dual boot XP/Mandrake?

I recently reinstalled windows on my computer splitting it into 2 partitions, shortly before installing mandriva/mandrake on the second half of the disk. Everything was going smoothly, but this is my first time installing linux, and something must have gone wrong. I think I must have forgotten to install grub or something, because there’s no option to boot into windows XP. This is my 3rd time reformatting, and my 5th time reinstalling, so please don’t ask me to start from scratch. =_=

This is the most frustrating thing in the world. Could someone please tell me how to install and set up grub/lilo?

Thanks in advance.

How do I uninstall Mandriva Linux?

About a year back I divided my hard drive into 3 drives with 24 GB, 14 GB and 42 GB. I installed Linux on the 14 GB partition and now the partition is no longer available through Windows XP.
I’ve got no idea if I’m using LILO or GRUB. I can’t seem to figure it out.
I want to get that memory back to Windows by uninstalling Linux.
Can anyone please point me to a site, or please explain how that’s done?

Thanks in advance.

Which "Flavor" of Linux is the best?

I really don’t know very much about Linux but I am very anxious to learn about it. In your opinion, which version would be the best for someone who is looking to learn the "in’s & out’s" of Linux (Red Hat, Linspire, Mandrake, etc.)? Which is the most user friendly? I have heard a lot of good things about Linspire. What is your take on this? Thanks in advance for your advice.

or the mandrake root.

I installed mandriva, and my disk drive got broken shortly after. So I tried to update to the newest version and nothing works, plus it stayed at Mandriva 2009 instead of 2010. I can’t open urpmi, can’t install things from .RPM packages, can’t update, etc. etc. and graphic acceleration won’t (can’t) start, I have to run metacity from terminal and everything goes very slow. Nothing works now, what do I do?
and yes, I have tried replacing the kernel, as suggested before.

Thanks in advance.
No, no. My DVD drive broke, so I can’t put a new CD in to install Linux. It’s not the hard drive. ;)
Let me assure you, NOTHING works, not even booting from USB… I’m not new to Linux, I have tried USB booting, Unetbootin, etc. Not even that will work. It’s not the hard drive and I’m starting to think that the only way I can fix it is to get a new DVD drive, but that will take a long time to get for me.

Thanks in advance.

I just installed this about a week ago; it’s version 10, Julia. And I’m a first-time Linux user.

I’ve been using AVG Free for many years on Windows and really like it; in fact, it’s still installed and running on the XP partition on this computer. Now I’d like to put it on this Mint installation. But when I access that page on the AVG Free site – http://free.avg.com/us-en/download.prd-alf – I see several choices:
deb
rpm
sh
tar.gz

And I don’t know which of these will work with my version of Mint.

Each of these files is almost 90 megabytes. I’m on a wireless connection which not only is not very fast, but also has a monthly limit. So I really would like to get the right one downloaded the first time. Which one should I choose?

Thanks in advance for your help.

(I put this question on the Mint users forum as well, so you might see it there if you’re a member. But sometimes I have better luck here, so I decided to put it in both places.)

I had configured my own linux box and hosted a Java web application using Tomcat server. When I access http://linux_box_ip:8080 on my linux box it works well. Then when I tried to access this application by typing the http://linux_box_ip:8080 in a web browser from a windows xp box, I can’t access my web application. Can anyone tell me what needs to be configured in order to access my linux box from windows box? BTW my linux ip address is dynamic and allocated by my ISP/cable company comcast. Thanks in advance…

Watch streaming media in Linux?

So i installed Yellow Dog Linux 6 on my PS3, got the internet, video everything working great but i cant find a way to make streaming WMV files to play from a browser. I tried installing MPlayer and MPlayerplug-in but i dont know how to do it for sure ( compiling the source n etc.) Is there any way to make the installation with RPM packages ? when i "tried to install" MPlayer ./configure make and make install all completed but i cant find the program anywhere.

Thanks in advance from any1 that could help me out.
Well YDL is the one that best supports the PS# so i wonna make sure the internet and display work properly in 1st place. i already have w32codecs installed. What difference does it make if its with RPM packages ?

Linux Mint 10 OR Linux Mint Debian?

For the time being, I’s still using Linux Mint 9. And I’m trying to figure out what my next long-term plan is going to be. I love the new look of Linux Mint 10. But I also love the potential of great things that can come from Linux Mint Debian (such as life without Ubuntu!). If this was about "playing it safe", then staying with Linux Mint 9 for the LTS seems obvious. But I’m not the kind of Linux support that like to stay in the same place forever; I like to look ahead!

Please tell me your second opinions. Thanks in advance.

Which Linux OS is good for me?

Hello, Im currently in grade 12 and im wanting to find a good OS to use for my university years.

So Im running vista and in getting Windows 7 but I’m wanting to try a Linux OS. I tried Fedora, Ubuntu and Mint OS, but I have troubles (i.e unfamiliar to the RPM and other commands) and I had some trouble with my graphic card :(

So here is my System specs:

-Intel Core2 QUAD @ 2.33GHz
-nVIDIA 9500GS
-6GB RAM
-1TB HDD
-802.11b/g wireless

Note that I might be getting a laptop but the specs above are of my desktop)

So which Linux OS should I try?

Im looking for:
-Something easy to use (but I don’t mind challenges or learning something new)
-Im used to more a KDE then GNOME
-Easy to customize
-Multi-task/Multi-thread
-Good platform for Development and research and data analyzing/creating/modifying and also good for using Engineering/Scientific Applications (need that as im going into aerospace)
-Good for documenting and office working (i.e Microsoft Office or any variant and able to use Adobe)
-Good for multimedia
-Good for gaming
-good for leisure use
-very good system tools and a great security system
-and just overall very efficient, powerful, long lasting, and the ability to utilize new Technology (i.e. touch screen)

Please and thank you and I know some people might say stick with Windows, but I don’t want to be in trouble of viruses and data loss.

Thanks in advance :)

URPMI is uninstalled on Linux Mandriva?

I have asked about this before, in short my system has a corrupt kernel, I have no disk drive so I can’t just re-install Linux and Unetbootin will not work on this system as it is.

URPMI is the defualt package needed for changing major system settings and installing pretty much anything, when I try to start URPMI (like it should already be started) I get an error saying command not found.

How do I go about fixing this? As I am not a typical Mandriva user…

Thanks in advance.

(yes, this is a server n00b question)

One potential host has Apache/1.3.33 (Debian GNU/Linux) server type…

And the other one has an Intel C2Q Q9300 Single Processor Quad Core.

Which one is better, if all else is equal?

This is just for running a personal site, btw. And I’m NOT BUYING A SERVER, I’m trying to choose between 2 hosts with the above mentioned servers.

Thanks in advance.

For my TAFE assignment, I need to know what the licensing requirements for Windows XP, 7 & Mandriva Linux?

Thanks In advance!

I already have 2 computers each with Windows Vista and XP Prof and I would like to add Linux as secondary OS and be able to select the OS during the boot sequence.

What is a simpler way to do this? ..that is without formatting Hard disk or re-installing Windows?

Thanks in advance!
