ok all my life i have been a windows guy, all the way up from windows 95 that is… but i have recently been getting into linux with my boss who knows a lot about it but is just too confusing for me, and i dont think nodding to him helps because i know nothing about it… i recently built my first computer and am wanting to partition the hdd so i can put another os like linux or something on it… i just need help understanding the differences of each os, he has gotten me into ubuntu because that is what he uses and said is based on debian, and i am looking at fedora, which i guess is based on red hat…. please tell me the differences between them all and which is the better way to go for someone who wants to just use it to experiement with software and internet and school work… please help!

Hellooo…
I am sorry i am new to the game… i just setup my linux box. now i want it to be a DNS SERVER. I’ve been trying to setup everything on my own. but i am now stuck to installing and configuring bind-9.5.0-P2 on my redhat linux. I’ve been trying to search for an answer but there are a lot of conflicts especially with the distro and versions of bind. My box is Linux version 2.4.20-8 (newbie@testingmahbox.com) (gcc version 3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5)) #1 Thu Mar 13 17:54:28 EST 2003
under uname is
Linux stmserver 2.4.20-8 #1 Thu Mar 13 17:54:28 EST 2003 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
I believe the right version of BIND for my box is bind-9.5.0-P2
I just dont know how to install and configure it.
Same as all other tutorial i found.. it says download it and extract and
./configure and make
i did the all the line above. now im stuck on what to do next.
Please help? THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!!!!

I’m on a Linux compter in one of my college’s computer labs, it’s 64-bit and running Red Hat distribution. From http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ I tried both .tar.gz and .rpm.
When I unzipped the tar file I got a file called libflashplayer.so, and when I tried to open it I got an error that said "couldn’t display [path]/libflashplayer.so".
When I extracted the the .rpm, I got a folder with 2 folders inside, lib and share, and a bunch of files and folders within those. I found another file called libflashplayer.so, and it gave the same error.
Anyone know how to get it to work?

I’m on a Linux compter in one of my college’s computer labs, and it’s saying it doesn’t have Flash Player. The computer is 64-bit and running Red Hat distribution. What version of Flash should I get from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ ? (if you can’t see the Linux options, they are):
YUM for Linux
.tar.gz for Linux
.rpm for Linux
.deb for Ubuntu 8.04+
APT for Ubuntu 9.04+
btw, I’ve had to "zip" a few tarballs for my programming class, so I know how to extract .tar.gz files. would that be the best option?

I really don’t know very much about Linux but I am very anxious to learn about it. In your opinion, which version would be the best for someone who is looking to learn the "in’s & out’s" of Linux (Red Hat, Linspire, Mandrake, etc.)? Which is the most user friendly? I have heard a lot of good things about Linspire. What is your take on this? Thanks in advance for your advice.

What are the operational differences between Linux and UNIX? Why would a programmer choose one over the other? What about software selection and ease of programming (with already basic knowledge of programming, and wanting to dive in to open source)?
In terms of Linux, what makes things like Red Hat cost money and things like Ubuntu not? Is pay-for OS based on Linux better quality than freely distributed OS? What is the best choice for Linux-or-Unix OS for a budding programmer?

Whenever I download any software for Linux, I find different binaries for different distros like Debian, Mandrake, Solaris, etc.
However, very often I have found that the same binary is present for both Red Hat and Fedora Core?
Is there any similarity between Red Hat and Fedora Core?

I have heard here that Ubuntu is probably the best for beginners; however, Fedora Core is also easy to learn. But unfortunately I can only choose from the below as its a setup on lycos dedicated servers
Debian 3.0 (Woody)
Debian 3.1 (Sarge)
RedHat Fedora Core 2
RedHat Fedora Core 3
Mandriva LE 2005 (Mandrake)
RedHat 9.0
If Debian what one sarge or woody or maybe red hat Keep in mind while not stupid I have been on a coldfusion setup untill I crossed over to the dark side.

as we all know Fedora linux is opensource as a big player to the open source community. and according to that it should be freely available for everyone. just like any distribution available i.e Ubuntu / mint/ Puppy linux/ Debian .. and so on. BUT i found this in teh small print on FEDORa’s download site as well as RED HAT’s
Fedora software and technical information is subject to the U.S. Export Administration Regulations and other U.S. and foreign law, and may not be exported or re-exported to certain countries (currently Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria) or to persons or entities prohibited from receiving U.S. exports (including those (a) on the Bureau of Industry and Security Denied Parties List or Entity List, (b) on the Office of Foreign Assets Control list of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons, and (c) involved with missile technology or nuclear, chemical or biological weapons). You may not download Fedora software or technical information if you are located in one of these countries, or otherwise affected by these restrictions. You may not provide Fedora software or technical information to individuals or entities located in one of these countries or otherwise affected by these restrictions. You are also responsible for compliance with foreign law requirements applicable to the import and use of Fedora software and technical information.
HOW teh hell is that free software now? isnt this violation of teh FREE software movement? you can see this at teh download page when you click on teh EXPORTING REGULATIONS…
opinions? Is that justified? I have friends who live in Iran and Syria. how is this acceptable?

How do I network a Suse installed machine with other computers, specifically Red hat Linux?
This is for a school project, and I can’t find any pages that tell how to network a Suse to other computers except how to use a printer.
