The company I work for has built a distribution using the "linux from scratch" route and built it from source. They intend to sell it on for loads of money but refuse to let even us "in-house" linux users from getting the source or modifying it to help us deploy it easier. Is this legal? and if so does that not go against the whole "open source" ethos?
The single application they run on the new OS is a in-house development ported from DOS, but how do they stand on licensing that too?
Just a bit confused,
G.

I want to try a Linux based OS on my machine as dual boot system w/ Windows Vista. Found lots of info in net, tried Ubuntu Live CD (without install), however cannot decide which OS will be the best for me. I’m not experienced w/ Linux and just want to try open source soft. I researched all of these distributions http://www.linux.com/distributions/ Is out there something else I don’t know about? Also the question is which distribution will work the best on my machine which is HP Pavillion dv9420us, see http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?storeName=computer_store&landing=computers&category=notebooks/dv9000z_series&subcat1=rts&catLevel=3&product_code=GA354UA%23ABA&tab=detailed_specs#defaultAnchor Thanks!
Can I try other OS without installing them (like Ubuntu)?

Is there a governing body that accepts changes and distributes them to the masses or does Open Source simply mean that you can make all the changes you want on your own system without violating license agreements?

I contacted my webhost to find out on whether i can run WordPress?
I’m an absolute beginner. I want to be able to keep my site fresh and up to date with articles and images. And i’m assuming wordpress can get the job done. The thing is my site was developed using xhtml and css. How can i integrate WordPress for this site.
This is what i sent to my webhost (got this from the wordpress.org website).
I’m interested in running the open-source WordPress blogging software and I was wondering if my (www.energyworkforce.net) supported the following:
* PHP 4.3 or greater
* MySQL 4.0 or greater
* The mod_rewrite Apache module
And this is the reply i got from my webhost…
hosted under Windows Platform. It support PHP, MySQL but do not support for mod_rewrite Apache module. You might need to transfer to linux Platform.
Now what do i do? What is this mod_rewrite Apache module. What does it do? And whawwt is my next plan? Do i move to a Linux Platform as advised or can i still use WordPress with the Windows platform.
I know i’ve asked alot. Thanking you all in advanced.

I am an embedded SW developer looking for open source Linux projects on the internet that may provide development opportunities to a newbie to Linux development (drivers, network, anything).
Ideally, projects that may be on the lookout for volunteer developers (don't need money). More sites such as sourceforge, kernelnewbies with several ongoing projects to choose from would work well.
Please list multiple leads if possible. Sites catering to linux are priority. Thanks!
