I am a newbie to this Linux program. CAn anyone explain to me how to log in as root? this is what is instructed on how to install YM on Linux. "Log in as root and type: rpm -i <filename> with the appropriate filename depending on your version to install the application." I really want to see it working on Linux.

I tried: rpm -Uvh wireless-tools-28-1.ppc64.rpm
Again i need to add the desktops path into this install line.
Right now it keeps saying no such file or dir.
If i use the installer it says already installed, i need to force this install.
Sorry i am a newbie to Linux so please detailed explanation please.

Ok so I’m pretty decent with computers but a complete newbie when it comes to linux. The situation this guy has in the link below is exactly my problem (even the same laptop) but i dont really understand his solution lol. so if you could kind of dumb it down and explain it to me in a more newbie-friendly way it would be greatly appreciated and of course 10 pts. There are only 3 steps.

Oh and if it matters at all, i have a dual boot with vista (obviously my wireless card works fine on vista) Thanks a lot!

I am a brand new Debian Linux user – and I'm loving it!
My monitor is a Samsung 226BW 16:10 aspect ratio. The display settings
in Debian has only 4 resolution choices, none of which are 16:10 – so
my monitor looks streched. How do I customize the resolution?
I'm looking for step-by-step insructions. As I said, I'm a newbie. Following examples is a great way for me to learn this OS.

I am an embedded SW developer looking for open source Linux projects on the internet that may provide development opportunities to a newbie to Linux development (drivers, network, anything).
Ideally, projects that may be on the lookout for volunteer developers (don't need money). More sites such as sourceforge, kernelnewbies with several ongoing projects to choose from would work well.
Please list multiple leads if possible. Sites catering to linux are priority. Thanks!
