It said I can install Ubuntu ALONGSIDE Microsoft Windows, but I’m worried. Will I have to re-install Windows XP if I want to go back to it or not? I’m using a netbook so unless I pay over £100, I’m stuck with Linux. Please help.

I am preparing to switch to UBUNTU, so I am reading up on what Ill need to know. When you install software into linux it seems more like it is really made a part of the operating system.Where as MicroSoft has Programs that sit ontop the OS. They seem to distance themselves more from outside applications.Am I on the right track of thought ?

ill start off by saying im not bias towards any of the competing operating systems i use all three windows linux and mac on a regualar basis. and i personally think that microsofts claims agist its competitors are the most inacurate pile of crap i ever heard. its almost as if microsoft’s only tactic is to convince everybody that everybody sux but them. so far every claim made by microsoft aginst its competitors i can proove to be false. i have nuthing aginst windows but this b.s. makes me want to leave windows and use linux or mac. i dont like companies that have to spread lies about ather companies just for its own sucsess. i dont dislike windows but im starting to get a bad taste for microsoft. mac takes shots at microsoft too. but they always show you evedince of their claims. and let you make your own conclution for the most part. linux is a diffrent animal yes. windows comparison to linux was ubuntu. if you never set up ubuntu the right way the the codec packs and updated distro packs then yes its true what they say. its like microsoft is making claims over sumthing they have no idea how to use themselves. these are just my opinions. im curious if anybody feels this way or if im just crazy.

I wanna buy a new laptop but I can’t afford a Windows license at the very moment. So I was thinking of using some version of Linux, one that is easy to install and use, and as the title says, preferably similar to Windows.
My everyday applications will be word editing (preferably Microsoft Office but Open Office will also do…), network / LAN / Internet access, working with USB sticks etc.
Thank you for any reccomendation.

We’re doing a simple classroom presentation comparing the Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems. I need help with this from people that are familiar with both systems.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

I’m hoping to set up a project for developing an MS Windows open-source program. Is there an organization for Microsoft Windows open-source software development which is similar to the GNU/Linux organization?

Linux is free and doesn’t get viruses
Linux is not a company like Microsoft. It literally is the people’s operating system as it is developed by volunteers around the world.

They say they want to cut spending. Very well, here’s a suggestion.
Stop using tax-payer money to subsidize Microsoft’s dominance. Switch all Government offices over to Linux and Free Open Source Software. That alone would halve the what the Government spends on IT and the very least.
So, shouldn’t the GOP support switching over to Linux and Open Source Software?

Quote
The reasons that Linux is better than Microsoft Windows are
Free
No virus because
1. It’s not as widely used as windows (if you want to infect people’s computers with virus, you would target windows because it’s the major OS)
2. Linux is strict. Virus can’t do damage on your machine because it needs root privilege to rampage. Most of the time you don’t log in as root.
Much more stable because it’s open-source (everyone can take a look at the source code, therefore perfected it) Quote
What do you mean by root privilege or need root privilege ? Also why windows not a open-source ?

Hi,
I just purchased the new Acer Aspire One with XP (rather than Linux). I have Microsoft Office for Home and School with a license for 3 computers so would like to put Office on to the Acer.
However the Acer does not have an external CD rom – is there a way I can do this easily?
Thanks,
Karenne

I am working on a number of websites and have found it EXTREMELY convenient to use Microsoft’s Web Deployment Installer to quick-start some of these sites. Most of them are Drupal and WordPress, and thus do not have any programming that is uniquely "Windows." The problem is, I have no idea how to access the databases for these sites nor even how to back them up.
I would like to know if I can go ahead and finish building these sites, with data, settings, and all intact, and then back them up and migrate them to a shared linux hosting account that will likely have cPanel.
Any help here will make my world a lot easier.
Wanted to add details that ALL of my sites are installed using MySQL – or so I am led to believe. IIS is completely new to me as I’ve previously been learning using remote hosting; using the Web Deployment Tool is a new thing out of convenience.

For years, Microsoft has referenced independent analyses of Microsoft Windows and Linux with a conclusion that the Microsoft Windows operating system is cheaper to operate when considering the life of product costs. However, critics say this is misleading because Microsoft has paid the analysts to produce the reports resulting in bias.
Do you believe that Microsoft is cheaper for businesses to operate over the lifetime of the product?

Compare and contrast the licensing requirements for Linux versus Microsoft Windows with particular attention paid to the GNU-General Public License. Discuss how these licenses differ and which license you think is better for the business community as a whole.

if you create a progam for linux, can you sell it like Microsoft Office is sold or do you have to make it open source?
