if you create a progam for linux, can you sell it like Microsoft Office is sold or do you have to make it open source?

Running Samba on Debian Linux?

I am attempting to set up an old Pentium III machine as a file server for my Windows home network. I do not want to pay Microsoft for a Windows Server license for a 9 year old machine, so I decided to try a Debian server.

I set up Samba, and edited the smb.conf file to include the correct workgroup info. There is no domain controller.

The workgroup computers (2 Vista, 1 XP) can see the Samba server, but when I attempt to look at the shares hosted on the server, it prompts me for a username/password. I’ve tried every username on the server and none will go through.

What should I do to get this resolved?

Links to any relevant tutorials would be much appreciated; I can’t find any that walk me through how to set up the server without being connected to a domain controller.

Why doesn’t Microsoft just copy the kind of features which Linux has to prevent viruses?
In that case, isn’t the answer to have a large number of different O/S’s rather than just a couple of big ones? And then to compile each application on each O/S?

OS – most distros of Linux
Office Suite – Open Office
Email Client – Thunderbird
Internet Browser – Firefox
Media Player – VLC
Graphics Processing – GIMP

All this software is legal, free AND stable. A Microsoft-free box is possible!

How much business will you lose for having linux instead of Microsoft. Does in the Philippines use linux for their cafe? How many people are getting caught for pirated software and what is the fine? Thanks.

Is there any mapping software that mimics microsoft streets and trips that I can use on ubuntu. Also if anyone could give me the names of a couple good linux distros( im new to linux) it would be very helpful.

What linux distro is great for my netbook?

I’m looking to replace my current operating system with a linux distribution. I would like one that has many applications for media i.e. playing music, watching movies, communication, and word processing. Any programs able to open microsoft document extensions would be great too. I’ve heard of ubuntu but would like to hear about others available.

Do you know any program like microsoft visual c++ for linux??

Do you prefer Linux or Microsoft Windows?

I’m bored and so I figured I’d just ask :p I currently run Ubuntu (linux) but I’m thinking about going back to microsoft/windows just cos it’s easier in terms of school installations and so on (the programs we use don’t run on ubuntu computers). So what operative system do you prefer, and if you want to, why? also, if you could put gender and age, just to see who uses what OS :p (I’m a 20 year old girl/woman/female)

How do I check my computers specs on Linux?

I’ve recently made the switch from Microsoft Windows to Linux. The distribution I’m using is Fedora 7.

What I would like to know, is how do I check my systems specs? For example, on Windows you right click on My Computer and go Properties. You then get an overview or you can choose to go to the Device Manager.

Basically I’m trying to keep an eye on all my hardware to ensure its running correctly.

Thanks.

I’m currently using Microsoft Windows, however I’m interested for a change to Linux. But can I still use back my programs that I’ve been using in Microsoft Windows?

I’m thinking of buying Linux XP but I don’t know if it works as good as Microsoft XP. It’s definitly cheaper than Microsoft and you don’t need certificates to load it on other pcs. Can someone PLEASE tell me how it works?

Ok so i got everything right with this installation.
Everything boots right in perfect.
Im running Ubuntu Linux Fiesty Fawn 7.04 on Microsoft’s Virtual PC console.
I have a problem when i try to apply the
‘Desktop Effects’ i enable them and then poof my screen turns white i cannot see absolutely anything! After that Ubuntu automatically turns this feature off (about 5 sec)
This is the most important reason in why i was trying out Linux to make it my primary OS because of the work effeciency that you get for example using the cube effect.
THE LAST PROBLEM is:
I find that Linux runs pretty slow! i allocate 512 mb of ram to Microsoft Virtual PC and i notice that Windows XP and Ubuntu are not even close in speed!
Please note that:

Windows XP and Fiesty Fawn are running side by side and Linux is a lot slower than XP!!!!
My Computer Specs are:
Intel Pentium 4 3.20 ghz
1 GB DDR Ram
200 GB SATA internal Hard drive
250 GB Seagate external Hard drive
ATI Radeon X1550 PCI (not PCI-Express :[ )

the reason y i want to get rid of mswindows xp is because it takes up alot of hard disk space and ram, i have only 128 mb of ram. do u think i shud get linux? if i do, i wont be able 2 have microsoft applications like windows media player and microsoft office etc.., what shud i do? get linux or stay with microsoft office?

i have an EEE PC 4G that is running on ubuntu eee and i was wondering what are the ubuntu equivalent of these window applications:
1. macromedia fireworks
2. macromedia dreamweaver
3. macromedia flash
4. coffeecup DHTML menu builder
5. Jcreator
6. guigenie

im not sure about using winehq because it might not support all the programs…
will it be better to just switch to windows xp?
is there a program equivalent to microsoft visual c# express edition too?

microsoft employees using unix/linux?

im curious, suppose there was a person or more that one person using unix/linux instead of windows who was working for microsoft. would bill gates immediately have them sacked and hung?

Also compare Linux OS with microsoft OS

Hi.
Im buying a new computer and i intend to get Ubuntu Linux on it. However, the rest of the computers in my house run on Microsoft Windows XP and Vista. Is it possible to have my ubuntu desktop on the same network as my "home" network (which has the windows comps)? In other words, will i be able to access files (wirelessly) on the windows computers and will the windows computers be able to access files on my computer? Thanks a million!

Let’s See For The Best And More Controler System
And The Most Easyest Opration System Between Microsoft And Linux …

Becouse I were Used Windows Sinc 1995 Bet When I See Linux I were look To a lot’s of Thig’s That Windows was blooked these and Access Denided ..

Vista treats every one the same, example: Your an Idiot and Vista knows better, I am beta testing Vista and I get annoyed after trying to install a program, getting asked twice if I am sure I really want to let it install, there are many different anoyances like that. I emailed Microsoft and asked them if the would add a Prefesional mode for people who know what they are doing to unlock certain systems but I doubt they’ll listen. I mean the Last time I needed training wheels on anything I was 5, so why is Microsoft giving us an OS with training wheels?

I know that Visual Studio is a Microsoft product and it is highly unlikely that it will run on anything else but Windows, but does anyone know whether it runs on Linux or not? If so how can one make it run on Linux?

Same question with Oracle.

Thanks.

Linux is often advertised as this grandiose OS, but at the end of the day it outputs the same product as Microsoft and or Macs. What makes Linux unique besides not crashing as often as Microsoft or running applications very fast? I work in a office and use a lot of application for which there is no Linux version (Linux might have some alternatives but are too hard on the regular user) so what is the appeal to use a Linux system if I have to tweaked the OS every time I want it to do something that under Windows it would done by a third party. What about the video games, most video games I play don’t come in Linux nor Machintosh just PC, and it would seem at times that software vendors or hardware companies are only concerned with the PC market and don’t distribute anything else to Open source projects such as Linux. What would be reason to abandon Microsoft?

What im asking is:

Is it as easy to use as microsoft XP?
Is it an easy transittion if ive previously only used XP?
Is it only for developers?
Any good? Worth downloading/using?

Thanks

Microsoft Windows or Linux(Ubuntu ,Red Hat etc..) or Apple Mac or OS/2 or Solaris ?? Which one is best.??

Linux vs Microsoft…?

Any pros and cons to Linux compared to Microsoft?

Which do you recommend?
