1. Which is the best version of Linux & why? (links appreciated)?

2. I only have one PC so I would want to try it installed to a separate partition, alongside windows XP using multiple boot options – I assume this would work?

3. The main reason I want to dump microsoft (& kick bill gates in the nads) is that every time I get a faster processor or more memory, billy gates’s bloatware slows it right back down again (most things seemed to happen faster when I was using a 386SX). IN GENERAL [app dependent], would linux be an improvement in this area?

4. When I remove windows completely, will I still be able to communicate with MSN messenger buddies?

5. How would you describe the learning curve for someone who’s used to windows?

6. In your opinion, Is Linux likely to increase it’s share of the domestic market, and therefore pursuade more software developers to port their products to Linux?
ADDENDUM: I’d also like to know how system stability compares to windows, ditto for overall security – I think my current AV (AVG) is available for Linux but I haven’t checked to be sure.

How do I uninstall Mandriva Linux?

About a year back I divided my hard drive into 3 drives with 24 GB, 14 GB and 42 GB. I installed Linux on the 14 GB partition and now the partition is no longer available through Windows XP.
I’ve got no idea if I’m using LILO or GRUB. I can’t seem to figure it out.
I want to get that memory back to Windows by uninstalling Linux.
Can anyone please point me to a site, or please explain how that’s done?

Thanks in advance.

Why does my computer always crash?

Everytime i play any kind of audio or video (more specifically with audio) my computer crashes! Its a selfmade computer with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU, 2gb of memory, and 74 gb 10,000 rpm hard drive.

The computer hasnt been running correctly ever since the power went out one day and obviously my computer shut down. When i booted it up again, it ALWAYS freezes when audio/video plays. I have updated all the drivers for both audio/video and done windows update.

I have the same problem witn windows 2000, win xp pro, win xp 64bit AND linux! Is it my motherboard or soundcard (creative audigy 2)?

One more thing to note is my motherboard has an ATI video chipset with PCI express x16 and i’m using a NVIDIA pci video card (very old school). I havnt bought a new video card (pci express ATI) due to this issue, i dont want to waste my money.

Recommendations for a good Linux-based free OS?

After years of sticking up for the XP preinstalled on my old computer, I have decided to finally make the switch to good ol’ open-source Linux. What would YOU personally recommend? Ubuntu and its fork Ultimate Edition seem great in my opinion IMO
Would like to add my computer has only 256MB of memory (sad, i know)

I just upgraded to Suse Linux 10.2 & now my system is telling me to free up some memory. I”m a newbie with Suse Linux so I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. It shows I have another partition of 70 GB of memory but I don’t know how to utilize it. Please help.

Swapping Suse Linux OS for another Linux OS?

Can anyone tell me if I can swap out Suse Linux 10.2 for another Linux OS? I’m not too happy with the version I have & I want to replace it. I upgraded from Suse Linux 10.1 to 10.2 but it just used up more of my memory which is running critically low. I don’t know how to use the other partition either which has 28 GB’s of memory. PLEASE ANYONE, HELP!

I am using a low memory old computer with a Mandrake LE 2005 Linux and latest Firefox,
I got an error 6 and Yahoo told me to get in touch with Customer Care, and also Answers here.
Thanks
Sam

Trying to figure out if you can host a Linux OS on a Cisco Router. Cisco config’s usually doesn’t take up that much space in memory and I’m trying to find out if anyone has tried to place a small version on the Linux Operation System on a Cisco Router. If so, were you successful? How can this be done? Thanks so much

How to find the memory utilized by a parent process in Linux?

If there is 1 main process and 3 child processes for that, I want to know how much memory is being used in total by the 1 parent and 3 child processes. I know only PPID.

We are using Redhat AS 2.1. In our application, one Java process is creating 100s of threads. I want to know the total amount of memory is being used by that process.

I don't care for the default interface on the PS3, the 360's is much better in my opinion. I am not familiar with Linux at all. I know what it is but have never used it. I am curious to know what advantages or even disadvantages come with installing one of these OS's on my PS3 (60GB)? Does it effect the functionality of the system? Do I lose any features? Is internet browsing better? How much memory does it eat? etc. etc. Please explain in detail. Thank You.
