Open-source programming embraces a philosophy that states programmers should make their code available to everyone rather than keeping it proprietary. The Linux operating system has had much success as an open-source code.
What are other advantages of open-source code (Linux or MACs "Snow Leppard")?
Why do you think that companies such as Microsoft maintain proprietary restrictions on their code?

Open-source programming embraces a philosophy that states programmers should make their code available to everyone rather than keeping it proprietary. The Linux operating system has had much success as an open source code. The chapter mentions some of the advantages of open source code, such as quicker code updates in response to technological advances and changes.
based on this paragraph i had to answer some questions for my assignment but i didnt get 2 questions they were:
Why do you think that companies such as Microsoft maintain proprietary restrictions on their code?
and
Are there disadvantages to maintaining proprietary code?
can someone explain this to me?

I’m thinking in migrate from Windows to a Linux operating system… But the main problem to do it is the Linux applications, which I don’t know very well. Could you tell/recommend some applications to me?
I need a good image editor (like Corel Draw and Photoshop in Windows);
A good media player (like Windows Media Player);
A good download manager (like Free Download Manager in Windows);
A nice media converter (like FormatFactory for Windows);
And a nice sound editor.
Those kind of applications are the ones which I use more, so, I need them.
And could you tell me what is your favorite Linux distro too?
Thanks, and sorry for spelling and grammar mistakes.
* With download manager, I meant an application for download common files from web, like music and other suff.

How do you actually view the source code of open source software and edit it? I’ve downloaded open source software with the hopes of viewing the source code but I can’t seem to figure out how. And is it possible to do this using windows?
Also, can you view and edit the source code of the actual Linux operating system once installed on your computer? And if yes, how?
Thanks for any help

So all i want to do is to be able to use the internet on my linux operating system – Mandriva. Whenever I go into the ‘hardware’ page, it has my wireless network card there, however, when I try to set up a wireless network connection with it, it is not an option for the hardware to choose from. The only thing it picks up is my onboard wired LAN. I have tried installing with the drivers but it just says ‘there is no device that supports this driver’. What can I do? Plese, I am a newbie at Linux and I need full guided steps. Thanks again

My desktop computer has windows XP installed. I have been thinking about wiping it and starting from scratch with a Linux operating system. Is this difficult to do? How much will it cost? What about drivers for my hardware?

When choosing a mini laptop (either Ausus EeePC or Dell), I have to choose either a Linux operating system or Windows XP operating system. What are the differences between the two systems, and which is better for a mini laptop that will be used for web-surfing and e-mail?
