I also have a tower and was going to install Linux there. But I’m not so hot with my laptops performance and I’m sort of open to new stuff so I want to know if installing Linux might do me well. My laptop is primarily used for writing and internet research.
Please no answers like, "Yeah, Vista sucks!" looking for cogent help here.

I’m fixing laptop, and the hard drive has several bad sectors on it. My intent is to get windows back on it (it is a friends computer), but windows won’t install until these bad sectors are fixed. I was able to load ubuntu on the laptop as a temporary fix and so I have an os to help the diagnosis and extract some data from the corrupt windows installation. Is there any disk checking utilities avaliable for linux that also attempts to repair bad sectors?
I installed Mandriva on my other laptop (for non-dual boot). I was switching from openSUSE. I got to the whole restart phase but when my computer restarted, the graphics started looking very jagged and faded and eventually, before getting to any significant screen, my screen turns into a faded light blue-green screen with nothing on it. My computer stays like that. My first instinct (i’m a linux newbie) was to panic and force the computer to be turned off by holding the on/off button. Once I tried to turn it on again, not even the BIOS screen appears. THe screens starts out all black then turns into the light-blue green screen. At no point do I see any sort of text. Pressing any key buttons (such as Delete, f8, etc) that BIOSes recognize the computer just makes beeping sounds but still nothing on the screen. I don’t know what to do. Please help!!!
The laptop is an HP Pentium 4, 3 ghz, 1GB of RAM, Ati video card *I forget the model*.

Anyway! when I go to the Yahoo Messenger site it says Redhat 6, 7, 8, or 9? I don’t know what this is, or what it means, but when I download any of them the .rpm files don’t run, how do I run these files?

I plan on buying some laptop at walmart with vista on it and putting yellow dog on it for fun and also to try it out before committing to the ps3 to use it on too.

It’s not that I have a ‘morbid fear’ of the command prompt, I just don’t want to have to take the time to learn commands for something as simple as turning the volume up and down, or making a video fullscreen…
it just makes more sense for it to be graphical to me.
