Ive just got a sony vaio pcg c1xd, for free from a friend.

Its the perfect size for just quick browzing etc, but its very limited in resources.

Pentium II @ 400Mhz
64Mb built in sdram (noi expansion here )
6gb hdd

What would be a good distro to stick on this machine (i have an external cd drive). Im running xubuntu on it atm but this is veeeery slow. I tried installing puppy but it wouldnt install grub properly on the disk…

Also should i replace the noisy 6gb 4200 rpm disk with a 16gb cf card? will this be slower or faster?

ok all my life i have been a windows guy, all the way up from windows 95 that is… but i have recently been getting into linux with my boss who knows a lot about it but is just too confusing for me, and i dont think nodding to him helps because i know nothing about it… i recently built my first computer and am wanting to partition the hdd so i can put another os like linux or something on it… i just need help understanding the differences of each os, he has gotten me into ubuntu because that is what he uses and said is based on debian, and i am looking at fedora, which i guess is based on red hat…. please tell me the differences between them all and which is the better way to go for someone who wants to just use it to experiement with software and internet and school work… please help!

Hello, Im currently in grade 12 and im wanting to find a good OS to use for my university years.

So Im running vista and in getting Windows 7 but I’m wanting to try a Linux OS. I tried Fedora, Ubuntu and Mint OS, but I have troubles (i.e unfamiliar to the RPM and other commands) and I had some trouble with my graphic card

So here is my System specs:

-Intel Core2 QUAD @ 2.33GHz
-nVIDIA 9500GS
-6GB RAM
-1TB HDD
-802.11b/g wireless

Note that I might be getting a laptop but the specs above are of my desktop)

So which Linux OS should I try?

Im looking for:
-Something easy to use (but I don’t mind challenges or learning something new)
-Im used to more a KDE then GNOME
-Easy to customize
-Multi-task/Multi-thread
-Good platform for Development and research and data analyzing/creating/modifying and also good for using Engineering/Scientific Applications (need that as im going into aerospace)
-Good for documenting and office working (i.e Microsoft Office or any variant and able to use Adobe)
-Good for multimedia
-Good for gaming
-good for leisure use
-very good system tools and a great security system
-and just overall very efficient, powerful, long lasting, and the ability to utilize new Technology (i.e. touch screen)

Please and thank you and I know some people might say stick with Windows, but I don’t want to be in trouble of viruses and data loss.

I have an Acer Aspire One A110 and its been quite a fun little project computer. I installed and extra 1Gb ram and switched the Linux OS for XP (will try and get Windows 7 on it one day) but the only thing holding it back is the poxy 8Gb slow ass SSD drive. I want to upgrade it whether its to 30GB or 250GB anything is better than 8GB plus it is in bits at the moment, that was fun but I thought while it is in bits I might as well get a HDD because I have found loads of tutorials but I am afraid of getting a 2.5 inch one because I am no good at small electronics and rewiring. I want to simply plug in the zif cable and it works.

I have the files and everything is just that i dont know how to create the cd, well i created one by burning the iso file but that did not install mandriva on the Hard Drive Disk (HDD)

If you know any good tutorial on how to install Mandriva, plis write the link down there or if you know how to explain it very well or have some how ideas of how to do it plis write them down

I have a laptop running with LINUX REDHAT-5. I am also a computer learner. I am unable to lock a particuilar folder in my HDD so also in my PEN DRIVE. Please help me.

I would like to install either linux or mandrake linux and windows xp on the same HDD. I would prefer mandrake linux considering I dont need a partitioning software to do this. But which OS do I need to install first?
ok so if I install xp first will linux still allow it to partition the drive so that I have 2 partitions instead of 1? Right now I have 1 with xp. was hoping so not have to use partition magic or anything. I read that linux will actually do this for you when installing (mandrake version only i think). my other question is what is the difference between mandrake and the original linux OS? if any at all. I want to use linux for the free software and security but want to keep windows to still be able to play my games, and use my camera and ipod. not sure if mandrake and linux are the same thing or not I just heard about it today.
I havent installed either yet because im going to do this on my old computer first. I have also used linux be4 I just have never put 2 OS's on 1 HDD
