Linux Mandriva – hard drives?

I boot Mandriva Linux from a DVD but I cannot modify the content of my hard drives…
(I dont have permissions)
What can I do? I cannot install Linux on my HD…
thanx.

One of my HD failed, but there is data I’d like to recover. I know the HD has no data integrity (because multiple failed sectors.) But SuSE does not know that, it would spend days trying to check for disk integrity. All I need is to get pass the start up and try to get as much data off the defective disk as possible and trash it.

Can anyone help me figure out how I can skip the start up disk check?

I had suse Linux and vista home premium dual booted, but i decided that i didnt want to dual boot linux, so i went into hd management and deleted my linux partitions. Now i restarted my pc and it just says Grub Loading… boot error 115 or something. I have a newer computer with Vista. One HD is already partitioned into 2 drives and I have another separate HD as well–all formatted Windows. What’s the easiest way to setup one of the drives with a Linux or Linux-emulating OS? Thx
