What Linux Distribution should I use!?

Okay I can say I KNOW Linux I have been using for a year but I have tried many Distro’s but there is always a lag, is it my PC because I know for sure it used to run XP and I have low ram and the standard graphics card.
Here are what I have encountered:

Ubunutu 11.04- I really like Unity, but don’t really like it is using Shell so I can’t really use Compiz, Plus I get a few lags that forces me to do a hard reset. I want to see if on 11.10 the lags are fixed

Kubuntu 11.04- I like KDE but it reminds me so much of windows and looks sooooo user friendly. My webcam is not supported. Rocksoul webcam. And desktop effects are always turned off.

Fedora 15- I LOVE IT!! Something that is for advanced users but the FullScreen for online videos would only work ONCE!

Now, I have Linux Mint and OpenSUSE on the waiting list, But Mint is still on the normal Gnome and not 3, I have heard you can install both rpm and deb. and OpenSUSE well the animal scares me.

Now what do you Recommend DOING!?

Which file do I download for Xubuntu?

I have an old PC running Xubuntu and I plan on installing AVG Free. When I look at the download screen for Linux files, I have the options:

.deb
.rpm
.sh
.tar.gz

Which one should I download? Is installing anti virus even necessary if I have this version of linux?

Thank you,
Thank you very much for that first answer, is there somewhere I can find a list for the file types that Xubuntu can install?

Do you like Puppy Linux?

Puppy is definitely one of my favorite distributions. I love the community, it’s easy to use, you can install .deb, .rpm, and the custom .pet files, and it runs really quickly on any hardware.

I read RMS’s entire bio an I don’t recall Debian ever popping up in it. I love (and need to install the most recent version of ubuntu, but hard drive is messed at present) linux; it’s my fave OS by far! Peaceful, great community, open source, good beliefs and mentality etc.

I know GNU is rms’s deal, gpl and the like. GNU’s not unix I understand GNU and linux completely; don’t understand debian.
linux is linus torvald’s kernal
I don’t understand why and how almost all gnu/linux packages are .deb?? WTF is going on ?

Is software for linux called "debian"? If so, that seems annoying ridiculous. what’s going on with that? cheers. thanks.
Can you install Debian os/gui like GNOME/GNU? IF so, why do I rarely ever see such OS?
To what does debian refer?

GNU refers to the non-kernal part of "linux"?

Linpus Linux Lite questions?

i am trying to redo a friends computer it is a Acer Aspire One it had Windows XP on it and Ubuntu Netbook wont install on it i am downloading Linpus Linux Lite that acer uses on its Aspire Ones only thing is i know nothing about Linpus how easy is it to use compared to a long time windows user and is it Ubuntu (.deb) based or Fedora (.rpm) based?

I just installed this about a week ago; it’s version 10, Julia. And I’m a first-time Linux user.

I’ve been using AVG Free for many years on Windows and really like it; in fact, it’s still installed and running on the XP partition on this computer. Now I’d like to put it on this Mint installation. But when I access that page on the AVG Free site – http://free.avg.com/us-en/download.prd-alf – I see several choices:
deb
rpm
sh
tar.gz

And I don’t know which of these will work with my version of Mint.

Each of these files is almost 90 megabytes. I’m on a wireless connection which not only is not very fast, but also has a monthly limit. So I really would like to get the right one downloaded the first time. Which one should I choose?

Thanks in advance for your help.

(I put this question on the Mint users forum as well, so you might see it there if you’re a member. But sometimes I have better luck here, so I decided to put it in both places.)

How is Debian pronounced? (Linux distro)?

Is it "Deb-EYE-In", or "Deb-EEE-in"?

Thanks!

I just upgraded from Vista to Kubuntu Edgy 6.10 for 64 bit AMD.
I tried installing the ymessenger_1.0.4_1_i386.deb but is says that it needs the 64bit version.

I have downloaded both the DEB and RPM files from http://real.com/realplayer/linux.

When I try to open the DEB file, Ark says "No Archive loaded"

When I try to open the RPM file, the message "package realplay-11.0.2.1744-1.i386 is already installed" is being displayed.

How do I get to install it?

I personally think that the linux OSes, need to develop their WINE more.

Contact hardware manufactures and software developers to ask them to make a Linux version or to have it open source (hardware manufacturers only)

Make it that the main Linux OS, have a universal installing program. Right now its .rpm for fedora and .deb for ubuntu and Debian.

Yahoo Messenger For Linux?

Any idea how to install yahoo messenger for Linux. Its in an .rpm file and I read to install alien to convert it to a .deb. I installed that with no problem, but when I did the command for sudo alien -k then the name after, I just would get file can’t be found, yet it’s there on the desktop. Any other suggestions on how to do it

Other then packaging:

variant choices of desktop environment (slim or not)
preinstalled application.
distro name
logo
community
rpm or deb.

I’m not putting down Linux I think it is a great operating system, but also see that it is run by a community that has a mindset with no real focus. Reinventing the wheal over and over and over again. Nothing wrong with doing so to learn or even share. But there should be one and only one officially supported and managed operating system for the home and business sector. The rest should only be considered results from personal development, enhancing code, features, creating new proposed software for the official version . personal use and sharing. And should be noted as such. Linking back to one officially managed standard Linux and package system. Linux could be so many more years ahead of Microsoft and OSX.

Linux is it’s own worst enemy. They think they are fighting a war against Microsoft. But the troops are only marching to drum beats of distro’s egos. So many chiefs. Microsoft is just laughing. How does Microsoft manage to sale products that are known to unstable over free products. Well its the only choice. Linux just has too……… many choices (really just pkg customization, custom names, and logos). But the average person doesn’t know that. And linux user will argue differently. But it is the same. Some better packaged then others. But the same nonetheless. None linux user think "which way do i go, which way do i go, ah yes Microsoft the choice is clear." Same thing applies for Game development Shops.

You might not agree with this scary thought ( I say scary because for some linux people its like tearing off their hearts) but what doesn’t grow eventually goes out of scope in life. Remember Eventually Microsoft, OSX will master each and every technology to great perfection. The effort of Linux will become nothing more then a college project and history knowledge. Your passions lives through the code past down and perfected, from one generation to another. Your code.

I hope the Linux community gets its act together. Or there is always PC-BSD (Free-BSD + user friendly). They are short on developers but they have one and one focus. Real centralize effort with infocies on quality all the way from the code. If I may say so.
I much rather on the deb side I much rather use Debian then any of the forks. mint, unbuntu, kubuntu, ubuntu ultimate addition, etc … Xandros, Knoppix etc… I tried ubuntu and loved it, I got curios so I tried debian. I didn’t see a difference, Other then the fact that debian is much more stable and the others are prepackaged. The difference is an illusion. Its just some logos here, name there, wall paper, prepackage so software, packaged choices of desktop, etc..

From the deb side I would go with Debian. On the rpm side I would go with Centos. Debian = Centos.

imho their should be only one official standard linux. Runned by some form consortium. If only the distros could put their ego aside.

Ubuntu Linux flash question?

I have recently installed Ubuntu Linux stable version 9.10. I am was surfing the web and found that I forgot to install Adobe Flash player. I looked on the Adobe site and found several extensions on the files for Linux. Which extension do I need to install Flash on Ubuntu?

I am also wondering if anyone could explain to me how to install it? I would be very thankful.

Note: The extensions were YUM, .tar.gz, .rpm, and .deb.
I am a novice to Linux.

I am installing Debian (Linux) to my PC.. I have a CD rom. The last stage of installation, it ask me to fill in the apt-sources so that I can get extra packages from the internet. In my polyteck, I was told to type in
:
deb http://kate.tekotago.ac.nz:9999/debian stable main
deb:http://kate.tekotago.ac.nz:9999/security stable/updates main

The lines will go into a text file etc/apt/source.list
but outside the Polytek, the kate server doesn’t work.
What should I type then?
Pls note that the answers should includes directories not just mirror sites. That is, 2 sentences that I can fill in the source.list. I have tried replacing the http.kate.otago.ac.nz with ftp.nz.debian.org and it didn,t work.
