The reasons that Linux is better than Microsoft Windows are
Free
No virus because
1. It’s not as widely used as windows (if you want to infect people’s computers with virus, you would target windows because it’s the major OS)
2. Linux is strict. Virus can’t do damage on your machine because it needs root privilege to rampage. Most of the time you don’t log in as root.
Much more stable because it’s open-source (everyone can take a look at the source code, therefore perfected it) Quote
What do you mean by root privilege or need root privilege ? Also why windows not a open-source ?

When you log in to Linux it’s as a user, when you want to change anything you have to enter another password to get root privilege (administrator in windows).
Windows is not open source because Uncle Bill likes to keep all the profits.
Seriously,Who Cares!Everyone Knows That. So,It Could Be The Other Way Around,If Windows Where Not Popular,Macs Would Be Exposed To More Viruses.
"Open source" is a style of development where the community, not a business, does the programming. They make the source code open to anyone who wishes to edit it.
Linux is open source. It’s made by everyone and is free. Windows on the other hand is made by a corporation called Microsoft who makes money by selling their product.
Root privilege is the permission you as a super user may have on a computer (and would typically have it on your own). If you imagine all the files and folders on your computer, you may have folders within folder within folders. If you back up to the highest level – basically the folder that holds all the folders – that’s the root. Having full control at that level is obviously something risky to have, since you could edit not only your documents and pictures, but system files which are vital to the operation of your computer.
For gaming there is Windows XP.
For everything else there is Linux.
WHY LINUX IS BETTER

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 6 Main Edition which is Ubuntu based. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled.
You would be best off RUNNING IT LIVE so you can get the feel of things.

Once you have got the feel of things you may wish to consider an installation
The Perfect Desktop – Linux Mint 6 (Felicia)

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 6 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.
Also well worth considering are Ubuntu 9.04 and Fedora 11

Fedora 11 Download

The Perfect Desktop – Fedora 11 (GNOME)

Both Ubuntu 9.04 and Fedora 11 can be run from the LiveCD as well.
Remember you can RUN LINUX LIVE !

Well, Root access from my understanding is getting/using the very heart and soul of the operating system. It’s like the Kernel of the operating system.
When malicious software attack, they like to get to the root since that’s were most damage can be done. Plus, if you gain Root access, you control the whole operating system.
Linux is very well protected. it has several layers that defend it unlike Windows.

Windows isn’t Open-Source because it is made by a company. Now I’m not saying that just because it’s from a company, that it can’t be open source. But in this case, the source code for Windows isn’t available for the public. If Microsoft were to give out the source code for Windows, they wouldn’t make any money since someone could just take the source code, and build themself Windows for free. For this reason, Windows isn’t open source.
