Can someone please give me a list of the most popular Linux distributions (or and open source OS for that matter). Also a small description of there category and what there for would be good. Also what would your recommendation be for a windows XP user.
Thanks.

Debian Linux, Red Hat Linux are some good Open Source OS.
If you are XP user and use your system just for entertainment then I would recommend Windows but if you are good in programming knowledge and use your system for development purpose then you are supposed to use Linux.
I am sure that once you get addicted to linux, you’ll forget Windows. Thats my experience but as said earlier in Linux we have to deal mostly with commands so choose Linux only if you love commands like we do in DOS.

This the the place to start.
Try LinDows..linux guys should this OS..
Ubuntu is the most popular Linux Distro…
Other good ones are Mandriva (Community ed.), Fedora (from RedHat) and OpenSuSE.
Debain probably has the most and varied packages (Ubuntu is based on Debian). Slackware is a bit more difficult than the others, but gives you a more thorogh understanding. Gentoo lets you automatically build a customized linux-system from source. LinuxFromScratch (mostly an eBook) lets you build a customized linux-system manually.
FreeBSD is a good alternative to Linux, based on BSD (Berkley Universitiy’s UNIX-version). OpenSolaris (from SUN) is a free (watered down) version of SUN’s commercial UNIX-version. Minix is a very small Unix-like OS, good for experimenting. Haiku is a GUI-driven Unix-like OS based on the short-lived BeOS operating system; it’s still not very mature, but shows great promis.
