Use the partitioner that is built into the ubuntu installer. It will partition everything for you
are you installing the 32bit or 64 bit debian? Since you have a 64 bit processor i suggest you use the 64 bit version. Also I suggest Ubuntu linux, It is built off of debian and has an easy to set up live-cd. That you put in your cd drive and reboot your computer to install it, using a very nice graphical installer. If you can’t down load ubuntu they will ship it to you free of charge, you don’t even need to pay for shipping!

Just remember you need 64bit linux NOT 32bit
If you’re a newbie in linux, try an easier distribution, for debian I vote ubuntu flavor. try to use gparted. I don’t know what partition software you use, however if gparted in ubuntu fail you, try to download gparted Live CD: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
Attention: Partitioning hard drive with data inside is not for faint-hearted ALWAYS BACKUP!!!
