One of my friends is using Linux because she says microsoft sucks. Is Linux an option for ordinary people?

My friend is kind of a nerd and I am not but I do agree with her that microsoft products tend to be somewhat suckish. (No, I’m not into Mac.) Do you have to be brilliant or rich to use Linux? What can it do? I don’t think I would know how to survive without Windows.

I am a very old man, I use Linux. If you use Windows you can use most Linux, it is almost the same. Linux is free. Try Linux Ubuntu or Mint they are so much like Windows. You can download, and burn to a CD or DVD Linux. The best part is you can put the CD in, restart Window and without installing Linux run it. It will not install anything to your computer. If you like it then you can install it.
I actually liked Windows 7 but somehow messed it up so bad it would not boot or restore. There are allot of free different versions of Linuxs some than can run on old old computers. Puppy Linux will work on a computer without even a hard drive! It runs in memory, the RAM on the computer.
Your call, Linux, Mac, Windows. At least you have options. You do not have to be a computer genius to use Linux. There is a learning curve, just like switching from Windows to Mac.
The average person wouldn’t have much use for Linux because most programs aren’t designed to run off Linux.
Now Linux is actually a cheaper software than windows. But there a many different type of Linux software like ubuntu. Linux is powered by unix which also powers macs. If you want a more basic computer to just get it right and nothing more than get a LInux operating system. If you still want windows which will probably consume more power than stay with windows
I am also using Linux and it is great experience, you don’t need to be extra brilliant to use Linux you can use Ubuntu, Linux Mint and other Linux distribution. ubuntu is one of the famous and user friendly.
Yes most of the software’s are designed for Linux but it is an old saying, there are open source software’s available that are the best alternatives and even Linux gives you full freedom.
I am in with Linux.
Only Gods and Unicorns can use Linux.
Silly mortals.
You don’t have to be BRILLIANT to use Linux, but it helps if you know your way around the computer first.
You don’t have to be RICH to use Linux; there are 100% free versions of Linux out there (ex: Ubuntu, openSUSE) that can be installed on your PC. You also get free OS updates, and you can download/install more Linux programs for free too.
Linux can do as much as Windows does; it’s just a matter of installing the right Linux programs to help you do what you want (ex: watch movies, surf internet, chat, etc.).
Linux can be overwhelming at first, so just take your time to look around and try things out to get more used to it. Just don’t change something you’re not sure about 😉
Why don’t you visit your friend’s house often and have her show you around Linux on her PC? Ask her to let you look around her Linux PC yourself; you have to try Linux for yourself first before you decide if you can handle it or not.
Have fun!!
Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a proprietary platform using OSS. Linux does have its limitations with some applications and in particular gaming.
I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled.

How To Dual Boot Linux Mint Debian Edition and Windows 7

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint Debian Edition then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD

Linux Mint Debian Edition can also be run straight from the LiveDVD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive
LUg.
Yes, it is an option.
No, you need not be brilliant or rich to use Linux. I’m poor as dirt, and I know at least two people who are pretty much braindead when it comes to computers that use Ubuntu with no real trouble.
You can do pretty much whatever you want in Linux. It’s not so much about what it can do but what it doesn’t try to stop you from doing. I can’t think of one thing in a Linux system that I can’t change to my liking.
You’d have to evaluate what it is you actually do with Windows before you can see how you’d survive without it. If you spend most of your time in a web browser, the transition would be pretty much unnoticeable. The more free software you use, the less likely it is you’ll have trouble when / if you do choose to migrate. Sites like http://www.osalt.com/ and http://alternativeto.net/ can help you find alternatives to programs on Windows that will run on Linux.
@SilverTonguedDevil – I used Linux for over a year and a half before I ever compiled anything from source. Please learn what a package manager is before you start making up lies.
Rich? Linux is free. That is the opposite of rich.
I have used Windows 3.1 to 7 (lots of non-numbers along the way), Linux, Mac OS 7.1 to now, BeOS, UNIX, and some old Commodore systems, and I assure you no OS is perfect or can be sold to all the people.
I am amazed that PC geeks get so hot under the collar about Apple and shout "It can’t run Windows! It is useless!" and then five minutes late the same guys shout "We love Linux!"
OS X has one-tenth the apps available as Windows.
Linux has one-tenth the apps available as OS X.
Windows users criticize OS X for being too easy to use, and not having a registry to keep you busy hacking your own computer. Linus goes much further out on the edge. If you think you can get by using Linux for all your computing needs without ever taking a month out of your life to learn how to compile source code to make your own apps, you are dreaming. If all you want to do is surf the net (and not use any site that has Shockwave Flash or QuickTime content) and other basic stuff, then go for Linux.
From the link below: "Unlike Flash, the Shockwave browser plugin is not available for Linux." QuickTime plugin also is not available for Linux. If you want to view NASA videos online, you are out of luck.
I also have a buddy who is a Linux user, and he has spent quite a lot of time compiling code after he has searched all over creation for that code, including Russian sites where he has to guess what he needs because he cannot read Russian.
Since Linux was built on the same plan as UNIX (OS X is built over genuine UNIX), you will be equally free of virus annoyance and have a fairly bullet-proof OS either way. Windows has no such security.
You don’t have to be brilliant, but you do have to be "patient". Time is money for me, so I say "No thanks" to the allure of saving $29 by using Linux on my computers.
You just have to be willing to learn something new.
My mother in law is 62 years and works in interior decorating. She uses Linux to run her business and hasn’t had any problems. It took her a while to learn, but she’s glad to have saved the money.
