Microsoft v Linux servers?
Currently running a Linux server but few understand it to maintain it. Would we be better converting to a Microsoft server?
For context we are a small to medium Charitable company based in the UK, running about 50 workstations off the server deploying both PC’s in the general office and MACs in the Creative office.
Because we are registered as a Charity we can obtain Microsoft software are approx 20% of retail price through the National Council for Voluntary Organisations.

It may end up being easier just to get a book on Linux server administration than to convert to Microsoft. Once you learn how maintain Linux server, you may find that it doesn’t require a whole lot in the way of maintenance. A Linux server should be more stable, and require fewer restarts than a Windows server.
what type and size of enterprise are you running? I will keep checking back to help answer your question if you would edit your post and let us know what the purpose for the server is i can gladly lend you a couple suggestions.
Linux servers are generally regarded as more secure, but that may not matter. I’m assuming that it does matter since you when to all the trouble of getting your own server.
I would recommend buying a book about maintaining Linux servers, rather than buying a Microsoft server. It would save you a ton of money and probably produce a better result.
If you have some particular problem, you should probably ask about that instead. And Yahoo Answers probably isn’t the best place to get information about Linux servers.
